I have played this game on and off over the last 12 years, for a total of 2150 hours. The game is highly addictive, with tons of exciting gameplay, lore and goals. There is always a reason to grind for higher levels or loot and raw materials, which makes this a great time-waster. Personally, I have found the early- to midgame to be the best the game has to offer, though I found the later stages of the game (for instance high level skilling) to be too slow and grindy to combine with my real-life doings such as university.

The most fun I had playing Runescape was doing the quests. Unlike many other MMOs, Runescape has a limited number of quests (compare Runescape's 227 quests with WoW's ~29000 quests), but each one of them represents a certain story. You have to reach certain skill goals to start most quests, and the rewards are usually proportional to the requirements. As the rewards mostly consist of skill experience and quality-of-life-features, finishing a quest can feel really good. Many of them are difficult though, so looking at a guide can end up feeling required.

Although the developers have been adding microtransactions to the game over the last 10 years, I never felt any real pressure to pay more money than I already did for membership. This is a major point to me: most goals can be reached through normal gameplay.

I have many good memories with Runescape. Taking the ship to Musa Point to get rich by importing bananas, lurking around deep wilderness to pick up burnt bones, double-teaming the King Black Dragon with my best friend and my trusty Compost Mound, getting player moderator status by trapping and reporting bots in the Lumbridge farms... I honestly love looking back at it all. The only problem I have is its addicting nature (which becomes a financial problem once you start paying for monthly membership), which is hard to combine with real life.

Free-to-play Runescape is solid as far as it goes. I recommend trying it out.

They made turn times more than bearable, which fixed my only issue with the game.

Lovely gameplay and music. The transition to 3D has not had any negative impact in my opinion.
The developers seem to care a lot about the updates they put out.

You can play as a cabbage living in symbiosis with a murder robot.

One of the dungeons in this game is a skeleton dungeon.

First you'll meet regular skeletons.
Then you'll meet flying exploding skulls.
Then you'll meet spooky skeleton summoners.
Then you'll meet skeletons with bows.
Then you'll meet more regular skeletons.
Then you'll meet skeleton wheels.
Then you'll meet a necromancer/cloning skeleton with three faces.
Then you'll meet giant skeletons in the dark.
Then you'll meet some random hollows.
Then you'll meet giant skeleton dogs.
Then you'll meet skeleton towers.
Then you'll meet baby skeletons.
Then you'll meet more necromancer clones.

AND THEN you reach the final area boss.
Can you guess what the boss is?
It's a giant skeleton put together by many skeletons that summons smaller skeletons as well as having giant skeleton bodyguards.
