7 Years of Letdown

Pepper Grinder has been on my watchlist for many years. I was anticipating it highly since its main mechanic looked really engaging. The fact that Devolver was the publisher also increased the hype for me, thus, I purchased Pepper Grinder as soon as it was released.

So what do we have here, is it a bad game? No, but it is a huge letdown for me. This game has been in development for 7 years and has a powerful publisher behind it. But the major issue with Pepper Grinder is throughout my journey, it felt like the game lacked content. By a lot. This mechanic could have been used way better, with way more varied level design. There are a few levels that have some ideas, but they wear out quickly. The music is nothing surprising. The pixel art looks good.

The bosses are terrible, they lack any imagination and play very poorly. I liked the final boss though. The controls are not bad, but they aren't as responsive and smooth as they should be for a platformer-action game. And why is there this much action in this game? It surely doesn't fit the main mechanic of this game and doesn't play well. Pepper Grinder should have been a game solely focused on combat.

There aren't any upgrades to purchase and we don't have any control over our tools/equipment, meaning we have no control over our playstyle.

Overall, Pepper Grinder feels like a wasted potential with this little content. It just feels uninspiring in every aspect. I won't recommend it to anyone unless it's like at least 50% off. This is surely a miss from Devolver Digital for me.

4 Hours of Pure Gameplay

En Garde is a fun little game. It has a similar combat with Sekiro. The gameplay is fun, the mechanics work well, and interacting with objects around the world in combat is a fun mechanic.

The best part about the game is that it doesn't overstay its welcome, it only lasts around 3-5 hours and ends before it begins repeating itself. The bosses are well made, and even though hordes of enemies with a boss don't really suit the game design of this game, it didn't bother me that much. The game looks nice visually, it has a well-applied art style.

Another thing I like about this game is that the devs didn't feel like "we have to tell a very important story to the players!". En Garde doesn't have the boring storytelling that many indie games have. It throws 3-5 hours of fun gameplay in front of you and that's it.

It is priced accordingly, but I'd recommend you buy it on a sale. Even though En Garde is fun, it's nothing revolutionary.

More of the Same Fun

Ghostrunner 2 has a lot of new fun features and is a good sequel. Probably the most flashy new toy, the motorcycle is also one of the most fun to play with. The motorcycle driving in this game is among the best I've ever experienced. In comparison to the first game, there are more creatively designed levels that stand out. A good balance is maintained between the different bosses.

I once again find the storytelling and characters to be terrible. These parts feel very redundant and undeveloped. They destroy the flow of the game. The optimization is fairly bad, it needed more time. The game manages to introduce new mechanics throughout the game, which is rare these days. The length of the game is perfect, around 7-8 hours. It ends at the right time never repeating itself.

The Ghostrunner series remains as one of the most fun I've ever had in an FPS action game.

A "Splendent" Remake

It's my third time replaying this game. Persona 3 FES, Persona 3 Portable, and now Persona 3 Reload, which is supposed to be a remake of the original game. There is nothing much to say about this 18-year-old game's remake. It's almost completely a visual remake, being faithful to the source material. Which is something I appreciate with the story side of it. I am glad they didn't slaughter the story like how it was in FFVII Remake. If you are using the same name as the original, you shouldn't change a beloved story. Persona 3's story and its presentation are almost completely the same. That's the same for the gameplay side of it as well, this is the part where the game needed improvements. I think with Persona 6, they need to redesign the gameplay. Because it's certainly getting old and boring for me. Even though Tartarus looks way better graphically, it needed major rework with its level design. It's the same linear boring grindy infinite dungeon once again. I wish they put a little bit of effort into that like they did with Persona 5's dungeons.

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3171837795

Story-wise, it's pretty good. The characters are fun to interact with and our interactions with them are fun. The theme and the presentation of the scenario are well done. Which is something I care about the most in a Persona game. Even though I like our friends and our relationship with them, they kinda feel like work buddies from time to time. In Persona 4, our friends felt like they were our childhood friends. In the original Persona 3, the finale, being the boss fight and the last scene already was unforgettable, but they brought it to another level. The graphics look incredibly well for a Persona game. Atlus made the right decision by swapping to Unreal Engine 5. It looks way better than Persona 5. The music is once again, god-tier. Which is something usual for Persona games. They are beautifully remade, even though I like some of the original tracks more. The UI is absolutely gorgeous. Optimization is very good, which is a rare thing these days.

To conclude, Persona 3 is my second favorite among the series, Persona 4 being my favorite easily. I wish the FES content was included in this package, 70$ is already too much for a 2006 game. Because this is the same game at its core. Nevertheless, Atlus had done a good job. I will be looking forward to the Persona 1, and Persona 2's Duology remakes.

❤️ Many thanks to my dear friend IwillbeanU for gifting me this amazing game ❤️

Infinite Disappointment

This review contains major spoilers.

Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth (LaD 8) is the expanded version of LaD 7. But that doesn't mean it's a better game than 7 for me. In LaD 7, they decided to leave the same yakuza crap they did for 7 games. We had the yakuza dissolved at LaD 7, we strived for it throughout the game and we accomplished it. It was the beginning of a new era in Like a Dragon games, the name change from "Yakuza" to "Like a Dragon" was also a sign of this. I was excited for the series' future, being bored of the same scenarios through all 7 games from Yakuza 0 to Yakuza 6. Then, I began (LaD 8) and what did I see? The Yakuza has been established after 4 years, and we have to dissolve it once again. Great creativity RGG. What a joke.

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3159194721

To express my thoughts about Infinite Wealth, I have to talk about Yakuza: Like a Dragon (LaD 7) for a bit. LaD 7 had a well-told personal story about Kasuga and his family. He was the new protagonist of the series, He is funny, stupid, friendly, charming, but serious and tough when necessary. He is a multi-dimensional character, unlike Kiryu. The new and extremely fun combat system, with a deep and variable job system that worked great, poundmates with amazing cutscenes. The music was top-notch, it had a new map, the main party members had good chemistry and they were fun to watch. The side activities such as Ichiban Confections, the cinema mini-game, Dragon Kart, and the quiz school were extremely fresh and addicting. Especially Ichiban Confections, It was the best side activity I've ever played in any Yakuza Game. I loved the family-focused rather personal storytelling of that game instead of the same Yakuza crap and I was very satisfied with the finale. It was the best Yakuza experience for me by far.

I had way higher expectations from this after LaD 7. I expected an emotional rollercoaster about a mother and son's reunion after 40+ years. They had a 3-minute cutscene with each other that was very weak. I expected Kasuga to have interactions with Saeko, especially concerning their love life, which would be a huge change for the series after Kiryu's nonexistent love life. We get these love interactions but 1 max in a 60+ hours long game. At the beginning and the end, which doesn't result in anything. I expected Ichiban to strengthen their friendships with the squad, especially Kiryu, considering it's his final game. I expected Kiryu to mentor him throughout the journey and teach Ichiban, and Ichi would show his respect and admiration for the legend. There were none except a 5-minute talk at the last hour of the game. I am not the biggest Kiryu fan, but why can't RGG give the Dragon of Dojima he deserves? It's his last time on the stage! About Ichi's other friends, what I loved about LaD 7 was that we had 3 main side companions to our side. Zhao, Seonhee, and Eri didn't have much place in the story. Thanks to this, we got to see detailed interactions between them, and the drink links were well written there. Most importantly, just like the rest of the LaD fans, I wanted to see Kiryu finally reunite with Haruka, Haruto, and his other kids at Morning Glory. But freaking RGG will do everything to not make us see this. I know they are reunited, but why the hell wouldn't you let us see what they'll do together? Why wouldn't you let us get emotional? We deserved this after playing 9 freaking games! None of my dreams came true so I was very disappointed. Screw you RGG.

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3161426933

The story we have here is rather very generic and something I call classic Yakuza-mid. As I said before, we try to get the Yakuza dissolved throughout the game and can not manage to succeed, potential genius sequel scenarios I guess (!) We search for our mother but get involved in boring Yakuza and Cult scenarios that we have seen countless times before. Many generic villains like before, though I seriously liked Yamai as a villain. I wish he was the one and only villain of the game. To be honest, I think Yamai is the only well-written character in this game. There was no need to have this many villains in a single video game. This alone shows how inharmonious the plot is. Bryce and Ebina are boring and have no screen time or well-thought-out writing in their roles in the story. I will most likely forget who they were in the next weeks. The storytelling is good, seems like as the playtime increases in these games, the lesser motion capture higher quality cutscenes we get. This is not something I like. Enough with the standing and talking dialogues, especially in main quests. I hoped this would combine both main protagonists giving each the necessary attention. I mean while Ichiban would still be in the spotlight with his mother, Kiryu should have received the respect he deserves while getting a rightfully deserved happy ending. No, it's the same Yakuza is bad, we are heroes, and we have to save both the Japan and Hawaii scenario once again. Eichi's story sucked, was I supposed to care about Eichi? Why would I? Just because Ichi sees him as a friend? No way. He is a traitor and I couldn't care less about him. I disliked the final cutscene with him very much, it was straight-up nonsense. That's what I felt about the story all through. There was no coherence to it, this game has one of the worst stories in the series.

Let's Talk about the gameplay. Being able to move is a great addition that increases the strategy options in fights. New jobs, poundmates, Kiryu's fighting styles, and Dragon mods are good content. New jobs and their both in-game skill animations and cutscene skills are fun to watch. There is a good amount of new enemy types. The gameplay is fun, I have no complaints with it.

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3084505410

Like a Dragon has always given effort into their side content. Hawaii is visually beautiful and I can see that most of RGG's effort went into creating Honolulu. The substories were fine, they are around the same level of quality and fun as other games. Crazy Delivery was joyful, even though it's similar to the "can game" in the previous one. Miss Match was boring and repetitive, but Gaiden's Cabaret Club was way more enjoyable. The quiz school is fun, even though it has lost its originality. Sujimon battles seem cool at first, but it's too underwhelming in every way. I spammed attacks with Kiryu and won every single battle. Life links are good fan-service materials. Finally, we have seen one of the best characters in the series, Akiyama once again! Memoirs of a Dragon are nice throwbacks, even though I expected more satisfying reminiscences. I saved Dondoko Island to the last, the major side content in the game. One sentence is enough to summarize it; it is lazy and repetitive. The things you can build inside the island, the enemies, and the environment, are all reused assets from the main games. The storyline of the quest is nothing but extremely generic. The management and gameplay parts are very shallow and the exact opposite of fun. It's one of the worst side content I have ever played.

Is Infinite Wealth a bad game? No, but I can't say I liked it, thus won't recommend it. I feel like I have played the same game 7 times, excluding Yakuza 0 and 7. I am a guy who gets bored fairly easily when a game does not surprise me or refreshes itself. When it comes to a Yakuza/Like a Dragon game, the story comes first, and this has got to be one of the worst stories and finales ever in the series. Having 2 protagonists was something RGG couldn't handle, neither Ichiban nor Kiryu's story was well written and presented by any means. What a disappointment of an experience.

Off To A Good Start

I have been enjoying Enis Kirazoğlu's content for over 6 years now. Enis is the head of Pew Pew Games, the developer of this game. At the same time, he's a highly famous YouTuber. I have always liked his personality, that was the main reason I have been watching ever since. Let alone his character, he is a gamer who has experienced 100s of games and critiqued them many times. So since he announced that he was developing his first game alongside a team, I kept looking forward to it to this day.

So did Enis, Furkan Kirazoğlu and their team work wonders? Is Anomaly Agent a great game? The answer is unfortunately no. But it's certainly an impressive debut indie game. It has nice visuals with cool pixel art. I liked that there were way more bosses and mini-bosses than I expected from a game this sized. The animations look good and the controls feel okay. I especially like the parry mechanic, a fun addition to the game. It has some ideas on the level design, but they feel basic. There are cool easter eggs. They tried to diversify the levels in terms of background design making most levels look distinct from each other. But there is no wow factor to the art, like in games like Owl Boy, Blasphemous, or Dead Cells.

Speaking of pixel art games, Anomaly Agent is heavily inspired by Katana Zero, which is not a bad thing. Every single game takes inspiration from others. The game's design, the level design, the storytelling, the visuals, the dialogue boxes, the dialogue themselves, and even the text fonts are very reminiscent of Katana Zero. But their gameplay and storytelling differ from each other. Differently from Katana Zero, Anomaly Agent is an action-adventure brawler. It's a game where you mainly use melee combat to defeat enemies and you rarely use the guns because of the ammo restrictions. Ironically, almost %90 of the skill tree consists of gun upgrades, so purchasing upgrades is kinda useless. Thus I have never felt the "I am getting stronger" at any point of the game.

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3146602908

I think the main issue of Anomaly Agent is something else though. It is its tempo and pacing. You are frequently interrupted by the dialogue and the cutscenes. And the dialogues are not few. I know the developers wanted the player to interact with the story but seriously, I think this decision has done more harm to the experience than good. The game never lets the player smoothly enjoy the gameplay. This shocked me cause I have heard many times Enis complaining about indie games telling needlessly much "story". The dialogue is not bad, they tried their best to deliver a fun narrative. But the writing and the storytelling are not that good. Celeste is a good example of what I am trying to explain here. Amazing gameplay combined with minimal storytelling yet had memorable characters and an impactful story.

Another issue of Anomaly Agent is enemy placement in its level design. The enemies are often placed very tightly or misplaced, causing a chaos-like gameplay sequence, where the player has to spam roll to dodge countless attacks coming at them. These encounters usually result in unfair damage to the player's health bar and, more importantly, the flow of the gameplay. This reminds me of The Callisto Protocol or Lords of the Fallen (2023). Another game that Enis specifically criticized for this very reason, strangely. Special abilities are another problem. Because you are immobilized when using them, you take damage. There had to be a short invincibility window to prevent cheap deaths. I liked some tracks in the soundtrack like the main theme, but nothing much else. The music could have been better.

Regardless of my criticisms, I think Anomaly Agent is a quality game, especially for the first game of an indie studio! I shared my criticisms because I saw no one mention these problems when I checked. Also, this is how I review games. "Brutally honest".

I recommend Anomaly Agent, give it a chance on a sale, at least. Anomaly Agent is definitely a way up in the Turkish game development sector.

A Timeless Revolution

It's my first time playing this classic. I have been waiting for years for these games to come to PC and the time has finally come. Let's state the obvious first; the ports are awful, all three of them. Konami spent little to no effort on bringing these games to Steam. You can emulate these games while playing them on such a better quality overall.

What can I say more about a classic that has been praised for over 25 years? Let me keep this one short, since there isn't much to say. Its ability to surprise me throughout the journey is what I liked most about Metal Gear Solid. It's no wonder they call this game a revolution in video games. Its story didn't emotionally connect with me, but I enjoyed every aspect of it.

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3123509261

Because the AI is better than almost all of today's games, it's a challenging game even to this day. I have struggled in many missions and boss fights. The boss fights are phenomenal, there are encounters in this game that I will never forget such as Hind D, Psycho Mantis, Cyborg Ninja, and Liquid Snake. The game is full of memorable moments and that's one of the things I care the a lot in a video game. There are little details everywhere that blew my mind to this day. I will keep it short since I won't be able to add anything new to the conversation about how good Metal Gear Solid is. However, I will mention that I was shocked to see the final scene because it was very similar to Resident Evil 4's ending. Seems like RE4's ending was a homage to this masterpiece. To conclude, I am glad I experienced Hideo Kojima's genius mind once again. We are lucky to have him.

Next-Gen Multiplayer FPS

This was what I had been thinking all my time playing The Finals. While it feels so different from other online FPS games on the market, it achieves being actual fun at the same time. It's just like how Apex Legends re-invented the Battle Royale genre back in 2019. I don't remember having so much fun with an online shooter since Apex. So after almost 5 years, The Finals has been such a refreshing experience for me.

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3112373064

My favorite thing about The Finals is the endless possibilities of how a match could unfold. Every situation can be tackled in an infinite number of ways using strategies and playstyles because the developers have designed every aspect of the game so well. There are crazy hidden mechanics, and the movement is very fluid. The game feel is amazing. Various traversal options for every character add to the feel as well.

My only complaint about the game is that even though the overall game feel is great, the gun responsiveness of enemies is a bit weak. You don't feel much that you are shooting at a human. Some visual and sound effects on that would improve this. Graphically, it is the best online FPS game I have ever seen after Battlefront II. 6 years later no online multiplayer game has ever topped that graphic insanity. Yet the game has great optimization considering the game has limitless real-time explosions and I would say the servers are pretty good. The multiplayer aspect also works very well. Strategizing with your friends various options with different classes and equipment is a whole other level of fun. Maps are very well designed giving players many options to act from and they are all very different, all of which look breathtaking.

Although some people mindlessly reviewed bombed it, it's nice to see that the game is receiving recognition. In an era where ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games like Fortnite or Call of Duty are highly played, I'm glad someone still understands what quality games are. The game deserves to be supported for years and years, and I intend to keep playing it for a long time to come. There are many praises to be told about the game. But I really want to keep playing it with my friends. So I'll just wrap it up here. The Finals is an outstanding piece of work. I highly recommend it.

Classic Like A Dragon Mid

I would like to begin by summarizing my history of the Yakuza franchise. Being a Yakuza fan, I enjoyed Yakuza 0 and thought Yakuza: Like A Dragon was a masterpiece. But I wasn't particularly fond of Yakuza 1-6. Among my reasons are dull gameplay, repetitive game and level design in every game, similar stories with ridiculous plot twists, boring main characters (excluding Akiyama), same map in each game etc. As you might have guessed, I've had issues with the repetitive nature of this series. I considered the Yakuza series the Call of Duty of the East, even though Yakuza is much better in almost every aspect. But Yakuza: Like a Dragon changed it all for me. Thankfully, the combat system had changed completely. It was extremely well made and we got a main character with actual feelings and one who displayed them. Ichiban is such a likable character and I enjoyed seeing him as the protagonist dearly. I completed Yakuza LaD 100% for the first time in a Yakuza game. That's how much I love the game.

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3080309736

After all this positive work from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios, I had high hopes about this game, so I pre-ordered it. I feel sorry to report that this is a game with the same formula as Yakuza 1-6 and I didn't enjoy most of it. A generic plot with characters that I am never going to remember after beating the game, predictable plot twists, and an undercooked villain. I mostly have no issues with the feel of the combat (except Yakuza 3) but this one feels kinda off. I cannot put my finger on it. One of the selling points of the game, the new "agent combat style" looks fun, but sadly is very weak compared to the "yakuza style", so I barely played the new style. They couldn't adjust the balance between them.

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3079834442

Let me move on to the positives of Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. The most important topic of the game: Yes, the cabaret club is very fun just like the previous ones. This one's slightly better because they made it live-action this time. Secondly, I can see that most of RGG's effort has gone into creating the castle. Yeah, the castle looks amazing and has cool stuff in it to spend time with. The graphics are getting better with every game. The interiors look extremely good, but the outdoor graphics need a little bit more work. I won't go into spoilers, but I just cannot skip that finale scene when Kiryu was holding a tablet. Phenomenal scene. It made me tear up! I hope it results in something beautiful for Kiryu in the next game. That sums up the positives of this game.

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3084505410

Unfortunately, the best point of the game is the playable Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth Trial after you beat the main game. During that hour, I had an absolute blast and it's barely visible that LaD 8 is their focus and this is only a cash grab. Dear SEGA, I know the main reason you made this game was to please Kiryu and the Brawler fans out there, other than making an extra 50 bucks per purchase, of course. But please just let Kiryu and this dated combat system alone. Because it surely doesn't work anymore for me. People will get used to turn-based combat. Look at Baldur's Gate 3 for an example. Just keep doing amazing RPGs after Like a Dragon 8 as well. I am immensely excited about that game!

Teaching AAA Developers A Lesson

I'm amazed by how great this game is compared to most AAA games I've played this year. As a matter of fact, it's one of the best games I've played this year given how bad things have been for PC players. I have been thinking about it. Almost every big game that was released this year was broken. Wild Hearts, Starfield, Jedi Survivor, Forspoken, Hogwarts Legacy, Wo Long, Redfall, MK1, Payday 3, and the list goes on...It was a very disappointing year for sure so I had no expectations from this one. When I booted up the game and saw that it had phenomenal graphics and ran smoothly, I was already pleasantly surprised.

The game looks better than most AAA games, and runs better than most 2023 games, even though I had some crashes. The lighting, texture quality, the atmosphere, and the visual effects are all extremely qualified. RoboCop: Rogue City has great mechanics, animations, physics, and ragdolls that make it very satisfying and well done. AI is also not bad. These guys accomplished what Bethesda still cannot even come close to in 2023. It's such a shame for Todd Howard and his crew, but I doubt they'll be ashamed though. Remind you, this game is 50$, 20$ less than Starfield.
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3075287972
As we return to RoboCop, the game was great, with fast-paced, high-level action missions and nice side quests to balance out the game's tempo. I did everything I could ever find and do in the game and I had a blast for 15 hours. However, I noticed doing all the side activities killed the rhythm of the main game and I got bored about halfway through the prison quest. After that level, the game sent us heavily armored enemies that took far longer to kill, which I believe ruined the level design and game feel. That's because the game kinda destroyed the "I am RoboCop, I am overpowered and I will bring justice here right this instant!" feeling. Yes, I still killed the enemies easily, but it took longer, which killed the tempo for me. It was still fun, don't get me wrong. The storytelling is neither bad nor great. I mostly enjoyed it but the role-playing stuff was not sufficient. They are mostly illusionary choices that don't have much of effect on the scenario, still better than Telltale Games though. Lastly, as I said before, the game plays so much fun, but I wish the game could reinvent the gameplay loop a little bit. That's a little problem for me, but just because the mechanics work extremely well, and the fact that it lasts around 10 hours, I was able to overlook this issue.

To conclude, RoboCop: Rogue City is an impressive entry by Teyon and Nacon that has potential. I honestly think most of the AAA developers should take notes on how to make a good video game from this game. The effort this small studio put into this is impressive. I will look forward to their next game. I am glad I gave this one a chance and I hope RoboCop 2 happens one day.
