None of this is to say Star Trek is unproblematic. These conversations are important and need to be had. They just need to be had with seriousness and context of actual statements from people who wrote and portrayed Ferengi in DS9.

As an American Jew and 3rd generation Trek fan, I’m pretty tired of the shallow and flippant jokes about ferengi as an antisemetic stereotype. They were nothing more than a highly sus punchline when first introduced in TNG, but their concept was fantastically developed in DS9. Ferengi were meant to be a stand in for 20th century American capitalism as a foil to the Federation’s (aspirational) near post scarcity egalitarian socialist society. With the Jewish people being the favorite scapegoats of failing empires for most of our history, I find it deeply disturbing that Americans are so primed to assume any character parodying a capitalist must be a Jew. Armin Shimerman’s Quark is an absolute masterpiece and I really wish we could have more conversations that include his voice, and those of the many other Jewish writers, actors, and designers who had a part in creating Ferengi.
