Disappointing roguelike.

No itemization at all. No unique builds, no synergistic items, pointless consumables. Here's an item that will give you more damage! More stats! No thought needed to "build" a run. Just go through and pick things up. Somehow, the game lets you backtrack and I first thought, oh it's gonna be like BOI where you can go around try to formulate the best way to pick up items or shift things around and duplicate them for the best possible value. There's nothing like that in this game.

Best part of all this is there's a limit to how many items you can get. Imagine, an item limit in a roguelike game. This is the first time I've encountered it. I realised that there is no power fantasy in this game like in ROR, Hades, whatever else. You're always going to be at this level of mediocrity in terms of ability and it feels terrible especially when you've invested so much time into a run.

The only saving grace that this game has is its gameplay. Its challenging but fun, but since there is a lack of build variety, this gameplay loop gets stale really quickly. And in a roguelike game no less, that sucks. There's better replayability in most indie roguelikes out there than in this AAA game.

The pieces are there, but the vision isn't. If this wasn't a "roguelike" game and instead just a standard third-person action game with rpg or metroidvania elements, it would be 100x better.

Good pixel art/animations, great enemy and sound design. The music bangs too. Very balanced but difficult nonetheless. Doesn't ever feel unfair.

Haven't gotten far enough to speak about the various upgrades but it seems like there's some build variety you can go for.

It is difficult to get into the rhythm of the game but once you do it's very satisfying. All the characters, enemies and even you, are a 1 hit kill. You have a dodge and invulnerability frames along with it which you need to use well. The highlight of the gameplay is the showdown mode which is essentially McCree's ult. It feels very powerful and also IS very powerful but it's up to you whether you can use it well or not. The game can be frustrating but that's part of the difficulty; to keep calm in the face of hordes of enemies and use the tools at your disposal to survive and eviscerate them.

There is a boss every 100 kills that appear, which is pretty easy once you nail their patterns, and some bit of story/lore that can be found when they converse with your character. Story isn't really the main focus of the game though so it's fine.

After playing for an hour or so, I have some critiques if any devs were to see this.
I feel it would be better if the ammo bar which is on the top-left of the screen right now, to be placed closer to the middle. It would help the player see how many bullets they have left more clearly without turning their attention from their character that they would usually need to navigate around countless enemies carefully to not get hit. My suggestion is to place a small UI element on the top-right of the player character indicating the ammo count. I think 20 minutes until dawn does this and it helps a lot.

The other critique I have is that in order to "progress" the game, to unlock more weapons and trinkets and also uncovering more of the story, is that you have to play through the game again up to the point you did and continue from there. Say, if you get killed right before that point, you have to start over again. I think reaching 400 kills takes like 7 mins approx, so it can feel like a waste of time when you die and don't progress - skill issue, I know. I understand the argument that a lot of these games have this type of progression too. However, I don't recall those games to also have a one-hit death. At most having lives or HP or a continue ability or whatever. The game is short enough, so I don't believe this to be that big of an issue but I know other players of the lower skill variety will feel the frustration more.

Either way, it's a pretty good game, especially for $5. I hope there will be more content for it but it looks to be a one and done type of game with no future content updates or DLC. Please prove me wrong. :)

I find the title of the game misleading. "Monster Hunter: World"? I bought the game, loaded it up and played through the entire campaign and killed all the monsters. I'd like to think that I've seen the entire game at this point, however, I find myself scratching my head as there are only 5 playable game areas, which are the Ancient Forest, Coral Highlands, Wildspire Waste, Rotten Vale and the Elder's Recess.

Forgive me if I am mistaken but, these do not represent any locations in our planet Earth. Even if they were, it is not enough. Do these developers, Capcom, realise that the world is a much larger and diverse place than what is shown in these playable areas? I was thoroughly disappointed upon figuring that out. In my opinion, Capcom should not have put the word "World" in the title of the game if the game itself does not have anything to do with our world. It is bottom line misleading and a case could be brought up in court over false advertising. Sheesh.

All in all, great game. Get it.
