Sorry, I just cant say that I recommend this one. I really, truly tried to meet this game on its own terms and not be overly-critical because of the reputation Bethesda has created for itself in the past few years. Its still such a bland, boring chore to play, one that I don't find myself wanting to boot up anymore.

One note I want to say off the bat: Yes, I do intend on returning to this game when there are some extensive mods to fix the things I don't like, and No, I'm not going to give Bethesda a pass because other people love to fix their games for them.

I was told that the start is rough for this game but it gets way better when you get a few hours in and everything opens up. I spent 18 hours holding out for a fun open world Bethesda experience that never came. All I got was a few premade locations, bland characters and story, and some randomly generated dungeons in between literal HOURS of loading screens and inventory management every step of the way. The fun open world exploration never immersed me, and I was left out in the cold like a randomly generated planet in the outer edges of a Bethesda game.

The procedurally generated content lacks all substance, and the hand-crafted content (if you can find it naturally) still leaves a lot to be desired. There's not a lot I can say that hasn't already been touched on by other reviewers. I agree with pretty much all the criticism that this game has received: egregious use of loading screens, bland story that you get railroaded through, side characters with no depth, side quests that are tedious and uninmportant, walling off most parts of the game via skills, and horrendous performance in all of the cities, to name a few.

Someone wittier than myself described this game as a limitless supply of plain pasta. It could feed you for many months but the experience isn't fulfilling. I'd rather start another playthrough of Fallout 4 or Skyrim.

Ive gotten most of the way through a game and I just wanted to drop a review to combat the bad ones right now. I can say as someone who has many hours in Civ 6 and Civ 5 that this game is a must get if you liked those. I get very heavy vibes of Crusader Kings 3 events and politics with the combat system almost like a total war crossover. Sieges in particular are fun and crunchy. I will update this review when I have some more play time, but so far loving it.

Honestly co-op is fun with friends if you're nostalgic for the Star Wars feeling, but other than that I don't recommend. Multiplayer is a nightmare.

I started Prey back when it came out and had a real problem with this game's padding and bloat. To me it kind of felt like some of the events were really thrown in there just to add to the game time and not much else.

Coming back to it 3 years later I was finally able to push through to the end and found myself quite satisfied at the experience as a whole. That being said, I still retain that the game does drag for a while, and doesn't keep up the horror elements that it starts out strong with. Anyone who plays through the opening few hours of this might expect the horror aspects of the mimics to keep that atmosphere going, but I found that facade to fade after the player gets a shotgun and enough ammo for said shotgun.

What this game does have though is some amazing writing. I was really pulled in by the games story, Prey managed to instill this paranoia in me that made me constantly feel like everyone was lying to me, like I couldn't even trust myself. Some of the Typhon powers are also really fun to find and use (if not a bit overpowered towards the end). The moment to moment gameplay does the overall experience a bit of a disservice, but it's saved by the implications of those gameplay choices you make. How far will you go to do what you think is right? Who is worth saving? Can you justify the research you've done on the Talos 1 space station? These questions hang over your head as you decide which quests will become a priority to you and which have to be left alone for the sake of your own resources.

Overall, I really enjoyed Prey as a game to play in large chunks over a week or two. The ending left me satisfied and validated in the choices I made along the way. Not a perfect gaming experience, but one I hope others like myself don't miss out on.
