Did you try out the demos first? You can play for quite a bit so you can easily decide if you like them or not. The maps aren't needed, but it's a good idea to to get the full experience. You can take longer trips, and each map as new assets and generally better looking cities, etc. You can still have fun with the base game by itself, of course.
