Hester Prynne has an adulterous affair and has a baby. She is brought out of jail and sent to a scaffold to be publically recognized for her wrongdoings. She wears the letter A and holds her baby as she stands on the scaffold for three hours. The governor and Dimmesdale ask Hester to reveal who the father is but she refuses to say. When she goes back to jail, Chillingworth poses as a doctor and asks her not to reveal who he is. Chillingworth forgives Hester and is determined to find out who the father is. Hester is a talented seamstress and makes a living sewing. Pearl grows older and grows up differently. Hester and Pearl see the governor to deliver stitching and find out if they need to be separated. Dimmesdale argues in favor of Hester’s keeping of Pearl. Dimmesdale appears ill and moves in with Chillingworth. Chillingworth is suspicious of Dimmesdale and Dimmesdale makes himself repent for his sins by whipping himself and holding vigils. One night, Dimmesdale stands on the same scaffold Hester stood years before and hopes that the truth will be revealed. Hester and Pearl walk by, and they hold hands with him atop the scaffold. A light in the sky reveals the letter A. Chillingworth walks by and claims that Dimmesdale had been sleepwalking. Hester goes to Chillingworth and asks him to stop torturing Dimmesdale. She also plans to break her promise about keeping Chillingworth’s identity a secret to Dimmesdale. In the forest, Hester and Dimmesdale agree to flee town and move to Europe with Pearl. Dimmesdale gives his best sermon during the inauguration of the new governor. Hester finds out that Chillingworth will be aboard the same boat headed to Europe. Dimmesdale confesses to the public that he is the father and he bears a red A on his chest. Hester asks if she and Dimmesdale will be together in heaven but Dimmesdale replies that it is up to god then dies. Hester and Pearl still move to Europe but Hester comes back to her cottage after Pearl is grown up.
