Something: Better.

WhiteRifle is a group of like minded characters looking for 'something better' than the frantic-fright and shoot-on-sight commonplace in the DayZ alpha.

While we're comfortable operating tactically in various environments as needs arrise, our members are more often found assisting new players and others with exploration and enrichment.

In short, we recognize the apocalypse is more about collaboration than continuing destruction.

...with maybe the more than occasional 'bad-guy/bandit hunting trip'.

First Demo Skirmish a Success!

In our first 2v2v2v?... demo skirmish we had a successful match up of"

After nearly two hours, everyone was finally dead (sometimes more than once) with the final blow coming from the Magnum of a stranger, after I missed with a sawed-off shotty blast, and canceled action on pulling my bat.

I thought it was either Smith or Wolf who'd killed me, but after everyone got back into group chat we settled things.

As best I can piece together - Kyle arrived after Sin and I held the school. We explained it was a max 2 man group, and Sin promptly handcuffed him and sent him out for sniper bait. Downstairs, Abe had entered the building and promptly killed Kyle. At some point Wolf ran in and was dropped into unconscious status by either Sin or Abe, and Abe was summarily dropped by Sin (I think), Rebel's frame rate dropped during a battle with Smith, from which neither man returned. Abe was revived at one point by smith, but was promptly shot again by either Sin or a non-affiliated server player.

All in all, the school was held from about 5 minutes in by George, and Sin found me and convinced me he was without a battle buddy early on. I'd planned to get the drop on him and press him for an answer about where his partner was hiding- but he entered the building behind me, and rather politely didn't shoot me. We left a stove burning downstairs for verification purposes (so nobody else could say they'd been there, without noticing it) and we held the best we could. Swapping floors regularly, and moving indoors once the firing began.

All in all, it was an awesome time.

Next one we'll play # vs. # even teams- and see how that goes.

Thanks to everyone who joined, and player of the week goes to Sin for being the only guy to show up and reloot his own corpse before we were done, and for constantly complaining once a shot through the floor had broken his legs.

Three stages of a DayZ:SA player

Here's a quick thought I had on player development, as the game continues to grow.

It seems like we tend to progress through a series of stages, at our own pace (like life, some folks decide to stop progressing altogether) as the game develops.

Stage 1: "I want anything!"
This is the stage where you're so wonderfully new, that every noise frightens you, day/night and where you are are a complete mystery, and even a rotten kiwi seems like a worthy addition to your jeans pockets. Hooray for this stage, because it's a big part of what gets us all hooked. The visceral gut reaction to being chased through a field at night or dying in a fight over a crowbar- an emotional reaction to a $30 video game. ♥♥♥♥ yeah!

Stage 2: "I want EVERYTHING!"
Here we find 80% of the players currently in the game. Rather than move naturally into a 'survival' type mindset of carrying only what you need to continue surviving- this player wants everything. Two long guns, a few spare handguns, a pristine fire axe, the red dot for the .45, a weapon flashlight they never use on either weapon, a few supressors that don't yet do anything and surely a pristine set of TTSKO's sounds good because they each have a couple extra pockets. I mean pockets are meant to be full, right? I NEED another two rolls of bandages and that defib- by the way, you think a shotgun makes sense in a pack, right? I mean, in case I need extra firepower- I'll still try to cram it all into the hunter pack so I stay cammo'd out in case I run into any - ACCK! SURVIVOR! HOP SERVERS! PROTECT MY PACKRAT HOARDING TREATS FROM THOSE EVIL BANDITOS---- oh ♥♥♥♥, "ready default!" wait, was there a reset? ♥♥♥♥, I gotta hop back - I gotta ... I gotta... OH ♥♥♥♥! I'm starting over again... lets just say this phase isn't the most rewarding, since you never end up testing out all that slick new stuff and the only role-played is packrat garage sale hoarder.
*Special note: Most bandits/caffeinated teenagers are stuck here - it doesn't matter to them that the stuff they loot is mostly ruined or otherwise readily available crap - they're bitter about being chased through that field in Stage 1, and want to spread that fear sensation throughout the world. Feel the hate flow through you...and go play some Call of Duty.

Stage 3: "I want...to do something..."
This is a more naturally enjoyable phase. The point at which players recognize the game is still so new, there are no real provided goals. You get to create your own rules, and your own goals. It might be "sit on this hill until I see another person, and say hello without dying" or it could be "pass out loaded handguns in Elektro until there's fighting in the streets". Whatever you're into, you end up awake as a flashlight carrier, and you're up and running in 20-40 minutes. Healthy status, a sidearm with 4-17 rounds, and a strong desire to do... ANYTHING. This phase, from my perspective, is the most rewarding thus far. Helping people from point A to B, safely. Getting a group of new players to stop arguing, find healthy status and set off into the woods to find a city you assure them has more grocery stores. Maybe sitting on top of a Chaepevosk high rise plinking at anyone who shoots first, down below...Whatever it is, this is the stuff we come for.
*Special note: Some of us end up here, and still feel a little bitter. For those, there's hopper hunting/handcuffing, and bandit baiting. These activites, while questionable ethically, can be seriously addictive. You were warned.
