The long awaited FS2020 is finally here!

You can get it on Steam or directly from Microsoft. Bear in mind that the full installation is roughly 100GB.

Do check out the store when you have the chance; there's a comprehensive marketplace that allows you to peruse different addons available. As of writing this announcement, one aircraft is available to be bought!

Now you have a flight simulator, congratulations! You can treat it as a game or a training tool, it really depends on what you got it for. Either way, it's a versatile toy. You may notice when you open it up, you have a lot of options. We'll get into that.

Go to free flight, select a place to start, the aircraft you want, time, weather, etc., and get right into it!

Right, yeah...controls...well first of all, you'll need some extra hardware. Consider buying a joystick and a throttle (you can find a twist-grip joystick with a throttle slider out in the market). This will be your primary flight control method. It should run you no more than $500.

Well now that you're done with your hardware and have everything set up, let's tweak the settings to improve your experience. Pick something mid-range. Too advanced and your sim will run out of memory, too low and it will look like you're flying over a low res painting.

To learn how to ACTUALLY fly, there are some missions which act as tutorials. In the learning center, Microsoft has some flying lessons narrated by Rod Machado, and the lessons are quite good. Try those out and complete some missions. Fly around your home town. Take a Cessna out from point A to point B.

FSX has a rudimentary multiplayer, which may be good enough if you just want to see other people, period. It's not the greatest, though, which is why I would recommend something like VATSIM or IVAO. Google is your best friend.

Join a virtual airline. That's the best way to engage in the community. Once again, google is your best friend. If you have a favorite airline, google if there's a virtual airline.

That's why the game is only 15GB and covers the entire planet. If you want more detail, you'll have to download addons.

library.avsim.net and flightsim.com and the go-to's for freeware, for both aircraft and sceneries. freewarescenery.com/fsx.html has a comprehensive list of freeware sceneries for various airports and non-airport locations (like city photosceneries). Once again, if you can't find what you're looking for right away, google is your best friend.

• Payware

Payware sceneries can be found on simmarket or other online stores. flightsim-scenery.com/fsx.html has a comprehensive list of all payware sceneries. There are a handful of options for payware aircraft, from developers like Aerosoft or PMDG. Google is your best friend if you know what you're looking for.

There's no right way or wrong way to use the simulator. You can use it as a training tool or as an arcade game. It's your call, and it depends on what you want to get out of it. Either way, it's a good recommendation to get involved in the community, either by lurking online forums at avsim.net or joining an online community like a virtual airline or IVAO or VATSIM.

Since 2009, this group was small and not crowded with a lot of players and fans of FSX, but now today, we made it to 2000. Hopefully I'd like to see this community more active now and then, alas it might not happen. Anyway, I hope you guys like your holidays and have fun. :)
