According to the Team Fortess 2 Twitter account, no such thing was ever a risk for the game. They have also confirmed that there is no risk at losing your items as long as you play on causal servers.

Despite them confirming that everything is fine, I STILL encourage people to take extra precautions like enabling your steam guard and perhaps keeping your profile private. This is just an announcement updating the situation

Rick May, the voice actor of Soldier in Team Fortress 2, has passed away recently. Really sad news to hear, I feel like we all lost a good old friend that brought such memorable memories for all of us in- game. So much good laughs and time spent with his goofy voice in game. We all miss you already.
