Yeah you know, that is interesting. I can’t remember (for better or worse) another game that side-scrolls (or top-scrolls for that matter which wouldn’t work as effectively of course) where one player battles on the ground and the other takes to the sky’s and they help to protect each other.

Regarding the discovery searching: I think it's already hard to find auto-side-scrolling shmup-like games, where you control a ground force (regardless of the co-op aspect).
My brain wants to say that there was a similar game like this maybe in Atari in some crude form. I will keep my eyes open though! It is strange that this concept hasn't been used more often.
