Silkworm (Arcade, 1988) or: Why not more asymmetric co-op?
Does anyone remember Silkworm? It's an 1988's arcade game by Tecmo (in the same year they released also the first Ninja Gaiden) that was ported to almost everything of its time. I remember it very fondly playing it with a friend in co-op on the C64. We found it especially cool and funny that we were not the same thing in this game, one were helicopter, one were military jeep. 1991 there was also SWIV that realized the same idea as a vertical shooter.

Isn't this asymmetric "Silkworm formula" a bit of a lost game concept, at least in 2D retro gaming? Does anyone know further games, which did something alike?

Ah! In Metal Slug you can have a similar experience, if the two players are in different vehicles.

I do remember playing this on the Amiga with my friend Sven!
Maaan we were rocking to the Baseline of the Intro xD
Yeah you know, that is interesting. I can’t remember (for better or worse) another game that side-scrolls (or top-scrolls for that matter which wouldn’t work as effectively of course) where one player battles on the ground and the other takes to the sky’s and they help to protect each other.

Lovely title theme!

Regarding the discovery searching: I think it's already hard to find auto-side-scrolling shmup-like games, where you control a ground force (regardless of the co-op aspect).

Yeah no luck for me with discovery Tag-search.
My brain wants to say that there was a similar game like this maybe in Atari in some crude form. I will keep my eyes open though! It is strange that this concept hasn't been used more often. :apafrog:

Nice catch! xD
That sure counts as a nice ground and air Co-Op

I've found another example of an asymmetrical co-op mode: 8 Eyes (NES, 1988). The second player controls a falcon while player one is an ordinary Simon Belmont-like dude.

Blaster Master Zero seems to have a co-op mode where the second player controls a god-like reticle x)

Another one: In Timespinner a second player can join and control the familiar of player one. So it's quite similar to the Co-Op of 8 Eyes,
