Issues with 5.1 surround sound using the Apple TV 4K

Good evening,

I have been testing steam link with my new Apple TV and I have been experiencing issues with my sound.

Using the default audio setting Stereo the sound is working fine. When I set it to everything else but stereo (Quadraphonic, 5.1 Surround, 7.1) I have no sound on the remote computer. I still hear the clicks in the menu before connecting the remote computer, but when connected there is no sound at all.

Setting the audio setting back to stereo and the sound is back.

My set-up is as following:

- Apple TV 4K connected to the TV
- Receiver connected to the TV and the TV passing all the sound passed through by HDMI to receiver

I have tested if 5.1 sound is working at all with my Apple TV and when watching Netflix or Disney the surround sound is fine.

Since I only have no sound when connected to the remote PC I think the problem is with my PC. But I cannot find the solution. I have changed the steam remote audio devices to 5.1 devices in windows, but it doesn’t help.

Is there anything I am missing. Please help.

Hello,

An update of my issue with streaming surround sound using the AppleTV:

Today I tested my Apple TV at a friends house, using his PC as a host for streaming.

My friend has a steam link setup in home using a xiaomi mi box. Using the xiaomi mi box the surround sound is working fine from his PC. When I replaced the xiaomi mi box with my Apple TV to test surround sound, we got exactly the same issue I had at my own home. There is no sound when using a differrent setting than stereo.

After this test it became clear that the Apple TV is the problem and not the host PC. Is there anyone who can confirm this? And maybe have a solution?

I confirm the issue. This morning I used Steam Link on my Apple TV and, like you, the sound worked in Steam Big Picture, but in game I had no sound (tested on some games).

I tried differnt options on client and host side.
Then I searched on internet, found your post, tried to switch the sound to Stereo and it worked.

@Valve, is it a known issue ?

Where did you set „Stereo“? The Steam Link App does not have any Audio settings.

what client device type?
there are many link apps, windows, linux, mac, tv, android etc..

on most, its in link app -> settings -> streaming -> advanced
