Alberta & Beyond at the Game Discovery Exhibition (GDX)

Welcome to Alberta & Beyond at the Game Discovery Exhibition (GDX 2024)! Glad you stopped by to check out the first Alberta Steam sale! As you can see, we ain't just the gorgeous Rocky Mountains, skilled hockey teams, and cowpokes of oil country. We make some pretty nifty games, too!

Alberta & Beyond at the Game Discovery Exhibition (GDX 2024) is a digital and in-person celebration of games made in Alberta, as well as indie games from around the world featured at the 10-day event from July 19-28 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

This is the first Alberta Steam sale, and it runs over top of "Video Game Week" in Edmonton, Alberta and the Game Discovery Exhibition[www.interactiveartsalberta.org], Canada's largest indie games festival by attendance.

Alberta is home to over 200 studios, including over 100 that are owned locally in Alberta. From cute 'n cozy games, to adrenaline-pumping action games, to VR: we've got indies who span the whole gamut of fantastic gaming experiences. We are beyond proud to show off some of the incredible games made by our talented developers, and indies from abroad who showcase at GDX! Help us uplift and empower indie studios, especially ones that are underrepresented and underestimated.

We are Interactive Arts Alberta[www.interactiveartsalberta.org], a non-profit that grows capacity for games culture and game development in Alberta. We began as a student club at the University of Alberta, but have expanded with a mission to make Alberta a great place to be an indie developer. While we make our home in Treaty 6 territory and the Métis Nation of Alberta Region IV, we are keen to build solidarity with indies around the world. We are seeking solidarity with like-minded developers around the globe to collaborate with.

We are the hosts of the Game Discovery Exhibition at KDays, as well as the GDX conference[www.interactiveartsalberta.org], held two-days before the Alberta & Beyond at the Game Discovery Exhibition Steam event, from July 17-18. Our conference has four summits: Indie Game Development (to skill-up our indies), Building a Better Games Industry (to strive for a more humane games industry), Indigeneity and Diaspora in Games (to centre BIPOC voices in games), and AI/ML in Games (to show off Alberta's leadership in AI/ML talent). Come hang with us at our conference next year!

We are also opening a brand new incubator and co-working space called the Walkthrough Collaborative Centre for game developers to congregate and share knowledge with one another, which is currently in early access, but will be opening in the fall to all game developers within Edmonton and Alberta.
