Tournament Backstory

Magical crystals have grown in the upper reaches of the north since time immemorial. The northern light ponies, who are responsible for creating the northern lights, use these magical crystals to help empower their magic to create the northern lights for the good of all. It was for these very same magical properties that caused the Brotherhood of the Sombrero to come up north to claim the magical crystals for their evil unicorn overlord, King Sombrero. Things were however not quite as one might expect. The evil King had used forbidden dark magic to summon forth creatures from another world, creatures standing on two legs.

Being mercenary by nature, these creatures were persuaded to fight on the evil King's behalf through twisted promises of loot and treasure. Hearing of what had happened, the northern light ponies gathered at a moot to decide upon what ought to be done. It was the wisest of them, Aurora, who proposed that they use whatever crystals they could scramble to summon forth otherworldly creatures of their own to protect the crystals from the clutches of the evil King. The creatures would be rewarded for their help. Being mercenary by nature, the creatures agreed to help.

Unbeknownst to any other party, the creatures would probably have helped out anyway, because they and the creatures serving under King Sombrero were bitter rivals. They couldn't stand the thought of the other party getting anything they couldn't have for themselves, out of principle. Hoisting the colors of red and blue, the parties would once again meet on the field of battle and continue their eternal struggle, yet this time around the fate of the crystals would hang in the balance...
