Fidel Castro’s legacy is not without controversy. Fidel and a small band of revolutionaries overthrew the unpopular dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Although he promised democracy and an end to governmental repression, these things did not materialise. Castro held power for 47 years, until Raul Castro assumed presidency in 2008.

Despite these criticisms, Cuba boasts improved social progress, including racial integration, universal education and health care. Defenders of Castro’s administration blame the US embargo for the country's economic woes.

"What Fidel achieved in the social order of this country has not been achieved by any poor nation, and even by many rich countries, despite being submitted to enormous pressures," said Jose Ramon Fernandez, a former Cuban vice president.

I have returned in an attempt to revive this group. As a platform for Socialist ideals, I intend to start by focusing on announcements and increasing the news outputs of this group. I figure a sustainable approach is the best way to move forward.

You may have observed several moderators and administrators have been liquidated. Many were inactive or had grown sympathetic of right wing ideology. Thus there are openings for people to join and become administrators of the group.

The role of an admin/mod in this group entails frequently posting current affairs and topical news from around the world. In conjunction with announcements on topical news, forum posts should made about events throughout history which have been polarising and contentious. These may be in the form of questions. This is to stimulate curiosity among member, make them engaged and create a healthy forum section where all can converse.

Ukrainian nationalists realized their long-desired goal of toppling an 11-foot-high statue of Vladimir Lenin in downtown Kiev during massive protests in the capital on Sunday. Activists from the Svoboda Party and other opposition groups—some wearing black balaclavas—scaled a ladder to loop a rope around Lenin’s head, then heaved on the cable until the monument listed, as if about to dive into the pool of human bodies. Then, with a loud boom, the statue collapsed headfirst, breaking through the ground and shattering into pieces as the crowd cheered and sang the Ukrainian national anthem.
