Although the year is still a month or so from ending in the traditional Chinese calendar, with the year 2022 nearing a close, this year we will be relaunching the "Hantzh of the Year" event after a long hiatus, and in addition, "Chengyu of the Year" and "Shih, Tsh, Ge, and Fuh of the Year".

There are no limitations set by nationality or language, please feel free to join in if interested!

This event is based on the annual Chinese character (Hantzh/Kanji) selection done in Japan starting from the Seventh Year of Heisei (1995) called "Kotoshi no Kanji" (今年の漢字). The selection collects and chooses from submissions from all across Japan for a single Hantzh / Kanji that can summarise the experience of the year. This practice was later adopted by other Hantzh using areas, such as in South Korea, Mainland China, Taiwan and certain overseas Chinese communities.

This event is based on " (올해의四字成語 / 올해의 사자성어). An annual selection of Chinese four-character idioms or Chengyu to represent the status of South Korean society for the year, started in 2001 in South Korea by a newspaper called the "Kyosu Shinmun" (敎授新聞 / 교수신문)

今日為漢曆臘月三十日・二十四節氣中之立春、戊戌年除夕之日。

「除夕」為漢曆年最後一日、新年前之節慶。 為中華四大節日之一。
又稱「大年夜」、「除夜」、「歲除」、「大晦日」等稱。
同中華多節日、中華圈各國（日本・韓國・越南）皆同慶。

「除夕」元為「逐除」、為先秦時新年前日擊鼓驅逐邪鬼習俗。
「除夕」之名與習俗最早記錄於西晉時期。

除了拜祭祖先、「除夕」之主要習俗包含：

・「年夜飯」
也稱團年飯或團圓飯、為一家同聚食。 料理依家與地區而異。　如華北常見火鍋、稱「圍爐」、華南則多為燒肉、海鮮等。

年夜飯菜色也具含義、
水餃似金元寶、意味富貴。
魚不可吃完、因「魚」同音「餘」、意味「年年有餘」。
年糕因「糕」同音「高」、意味「年年高昇」。
長年菜含長壽之意等等。

・「送神」
此為祭祀以送在人間之眾神回天庭述職、祭品準備豐富含茶果牲禮。 常見為送「灶君」和「太歲」神明。

・「蒸糕」
蒸糕為多種多樣口味形式之傳統糕點。
其含多種多樣如　甜粿（甜年糕）・發粿（發糕）、菜頭粿（蘿蔔糕）、芋粿、包仔粿、紅龜粿等

・「辭歲」
為除夕日午後各家張燈結綵、備牲醴菜碗粿類祭祀神明與祖先。　
供品中發粿和年糕代表年年高、步步高、事業發達。　飯上插春花稱「春飯」、因「春」與「剩」諧音、表示富裕。

・「春聯」
春聯具多稱、如「春貼」、「對聯」、「桃符」等。
春聯相傳演變於桃符、「桃符」為畫有門神圖、貼在門牆上的桃木板、後主要用紙以取代桃木板、並且加上吉祥年畫。

・「年畫與窗花」
年畫為濃黑重彩年賀圖的民間藝術、而窗花為中華剪紙藝術之一、創造複雜多樣剪紙圖樣。
主題因地區而異。

・「燈籠」
此習俗源於西漢時期、在每年除夕前後、民間會掛起燈籠、象徵團圓。

・「壓歲錢」
壓歲錢為長輩在除夕夜給予後輩以祝福多福長壽的銅錢。　元為以紅線穿連的銅錢、現代多以紅包取代。

・「守歲」
在分壓歲錢後、一家聚起、同歡至元旦的習俗。　為「收長壽歲」之意。

・「祭天」
也稱「賀正」、「祭天」為除夕夜間十一時、相當於正月初一時所舉行的祭祀活動。
以鮮花素果祭拜玉皇大帝、感謝庇佑、並祈禱來年順利平安。

以上為主要之除夕傳統習俗、除此之外、中華各地也具有獨特於當地的特別習俗。

Today is the thirtieth day of Lahyueh (臘月; lit. Wax Moon),
the final day of a year in the Chinese Hann calendar (漢曆),
also the start of the Jyechih (節氣) "Lihchuen" (立春) out of the Twenty-Four Jyechih or Twenty Four Solar Terms.

Being the last day of Hann Calendar's yearly cycle, today is also Chwushih (除夕), a celebratory festival before Chinese Shin Nian (新年; New Year) commences.

The Chwushih festival is one of the four biggest festivals in traditional Chinese culture, and is known by many names.
Such as "Suey Chwu" (歲除), "Dah Huei Ryr" (大晦日) among many others.

As with many festivals originating from Chunghwa (China), areas within the Sinosphere such as Korea, Japan, Vietnam all celebrate this festival or localized variants of the original Chinese festival.

The Chwushih festival originates from the practice of Jwu Chwu (逐除; lit. Drive Away) from the Pre-Chyn era (先秦) which involved striking Chinese guu (鼓; drums) to drive away evil spirits.

The name "Chwushih" and its main customs was first recorded in the Southern Jinn era (西晉).

Aside from ancestor worship, the main customs of Chwushih include:

・「Nian Yehfann」 (年夜飯 ; literally "Year's Night Meal")

Also called "Twan Nianfann" (團年飯; Year's Reunion Meal) or Twan Yuenfann (團圓飯; Reunion Meal), a whole family gathers together, sometimes including extended family to dine together.

Dishes served differ depending on the region and the family.

Such as in Hwabeei (華北; Northern China),
Huooguo (火鍋; hotpot) is common for Nian Yehfann and so it is also commonly called Wei Lu (圍爐; lit. gather around the stove).

While in Hwanan (華南; Southern China),
roast meat and seafood is more common.

Food also has its own meaning in Chwushih and Shin-Nian.

Shoeijeau looks similar to a Jin Yuanbao (金元寶; a type of traditional Chinese gold ingot), so it has the meaning of fortune and riches.

Fish dishes are not eaten completely, as the Chinese term for "fish" (魚; Yu)is pronounced the same as for "abundance". (餘; Yu)

Niangau (年糕), a type of sticky rice cake has the meaning of "yearly rise (improvement)" due to how the Chinese word for "cake" (糕; gau) is pronounced the same as "high" (高; Gau).

・「Song Sherng」 (送神; literally "sending the gods")

Song Sherng is a worship ritual, carrying the meaning of sending Shernming who are in the mortal realm back to Tian (天; heaven) for them to report a year's work.

The ritual is accompanied by rich offerings of livestock, tea, and fruit.

・「Jeng Gau」(蒸糕; literally "Steamed Gau";
Gau is a type of Chinese dessert similar to a cake)

Jeng Gau is a general term for many traditional gau or desserts, of which there are many variants.

Examples include: the sweet Tyan Guoo (甜粿)・steamed Fa Gau (發糕)・ salty Tsay Tour Guoo (菜頭粿) among many others.

・「Chuenlian」 (春聯; lit. Spring Couplets)

Chuenlian were originally Taurfwu (桃符), a peachwood board where images of Menshern door guardians (門神; lit. Door Gods) were painted on and placed on doors and walls.

Peachwood boards were gradually commonly replaced by paper, and more Jyi-Shyang (吉祥; Auspicious) symbols were included.

・「Nian Huah and Chuanghua」
(年畫/窗花; lit. Year Paintings and Window Flowers)

Both Nian Huah and Chuanghua are folk art,
Nian Huah is a type of colorful, stylized artwork, while Chuanghua is a form of Chinese paper-cutting Jian-Tzh art (剪紙), where complicated patterns and images are made from paper, then commonly placed on windows.

・「Denglong」
(燈籠; Chinese Lanterns)

A practice originating from the Southern Hann era (西漢), before and after every year's Chwushih, denglong are put up, symbolizing reunion.

・「Ya-Sueh Chyan」
(壓歲錢)

Ya-Sueh Chyan or Ya-Sueh money is given by elders in the family to juniors on the night of Chwushih, with the meaning of blessing them with fortune and longevity.

Originally, they were Chinese bronze coins strung together with red string, but in modern times it has largely been replaced by hongbao (紅包; red packets).

・「Shou-sueh」 (守歲)

Shou-sueh is a practice symbolizing longevity, where the whole family gathers around and enjoys the entire night of Chwushih until dawn.

・「Jih Tian」 (祭天)

Jih Tian is a worship ritual performed at the hour before midnight on Chwushih. The ritual is meant to show gratitude to Yuh Hwang Dahdih (玉皇大帝; The Jade Emperor) for a year's protection, and for peace in the coming year.

Above are the main traditional customs of Chwushih, aside from these, many regions throughout China have various unique local customs for Chwushih.

為「二十四節氣」之一、「冬至」在傳統「陰陽五行」中歸納「一陽生」之象、為陰消陽長轉化之節氣。

《易經》內、【復】卦象中含「雷在地中、復。先王以至日閉關、商旅不行、後不省方。」以曰冬至。

除了節氣之外、
「冬至」為中華數多傳統節日之一、又稱「一陽節」 、「賀冬節」等多名。
並也為傳統記時之「數九天」的第一日。

「冬至」節慶之始可追溯至周朝、漢朝時成通行節日、並日後衍生出多種習俗。

華北習俗

・「蒸冬」
一家團聚食餛飩、包子、餃子之習俗。 吃餛飩象徵破陰釋陽。 四川與山東也具有喝羊肉湯的習俗、寓驅除寒冷之意。

・「安耳朵」
吃餃子習俗的俗稱之一、民間認為冬至日不食餃子會凍掉耳朵並也不利農事收穫。另一說吃餃子為紀念藥王張仲景。

・「食赤豆粥」
傳統華夏人民以紅豆、赤豆、桃木等有避災袪疫的「神物」陪件節時。 中國大陸陝西與一些地區會於冬至時食用赤豆粥、認為其可驅疫鬼以避疫與卜壬日。

華南習俗

・「食俗」
華南有食湯糰、粉糍粑、湯圓等甜食。 圓形象徵天與陽、寓意年終團聚。　這些食品也分甜鹹味並含有多種多樣的餡料。

以紅與白湯圓以寓意陰陽交泰、並以有餡料者用作祭、無餡料者用作祀神。 冬至食過湯團也象徵著年長一歲。

如同華北、華南的食俗也依照地帶而異。 浙江內吃桂花酒釀、蘇州內喝桂花冬釀酒、南粵內吃臘味糯米飯與宰雞殺鴨燉八珍等。

・「曬冬米」
為民間將水洗白米在冬至日的陽光下曝曬、留給日後有病者煮粥食用的習俗。

・「過冬紙」
閩南和莆仙地區內一些地方有此風俗、為冬至時候的掃墓活動。

・「飲食占卜」
以湯圓象徵人，通過占卜方式祈求生育。

臺灣・澎湖・媽祖地區

・「牛生日」
台灣民間故事中、相傳冬節是臺灣牛生日、古時人們會迎接牛仔回家慶祝。
人們在番薯內挖洞、填入冬節圓 (湯圓) 一齊飼牛，以犒勞牛一年農作的辛勞。或在牛額、角、脊背、尾巴黏上湯圓、希望牠和主人一樣添福增壽。

另外也有將冬節圓黏果樹上，並把果樹劃破一點樹皮、澆沃上圓仔，亦在祈年豐收、碩果纍纍。

還會在門環上插榕枝、竹葉，以祈求家戶運勢像榕樹一樣茂盛健壯，像竹子一樣節節高升，此外榕樹也被認為有辟邪作用。

・「雞母狗仔」
雞母狗仔為臺灣人為祈求六畜興旺、五穀豐登、用生粿搓捏成牛、豬、雞、魚、狗、貓等造型的供品。
形塑後再染「圓仔糟」（湯圓原料）施以顏色。 蒸熟後用與其他牲醴供品一同用以祭祀，稱為「祭冬」。

以上為冬至主要習俗、中華各地個具有不同獨特於本地之風俗。 除了中華之外、漢圈內的日本、韓國與越南偕同慶。

Today is the sixteenth day of the eleventh month of the traditional Hann calendar. The day of Dongjyh (冬至 ; Winter Solistice).

Dongjyh is part of the Twenty-Four Jyechihs (二十四節氣), a traditional Chinese cycle of solar terms and seasons, and is also a traditional festival.

The Dongjyh festival goes by many names, such as the "Yi-Yhang" (一陽節) festival, "Hehr-Dong" (賀冬節) festival among many others.

Dongjyh is part of the "Yi-Yhang Sheng" (一陽生) sign in the traditional "Yin-Yang Wuu-Shing" (陰陽五行) Chinese philosophy, as a jyechih of fading Yin (陰) and growing Yang (陽) , reflecting longer daylight days of the season.

In the ancient "I-Ching" (易經) diviniation book, Dongjyh belongs to the trigram of "Fu" (復; Recovery/Revival).

Aside from being a seasonal jyechih, Dongjyh also marks the first day of the traditional "Shuu Jeou-Tien" (數九天) method of timekeeping.

The origin of the Dongjyh festival can be traced to the Jhou (周) Dynasty, and it became a commonly celebrated during the Han (漢) Dynasty, with many customs appearing later.

Just like many aspects of China in general, the customs of Dongjyh contain ancestor worship, food customs, greetings, and arts, all varied depending on region.

Customs of Hwabeih (華北; Northern China)

・Jheng-Dong (蒸冬)
Jheng-Dong is a custom where a family gathers together to have Huentuen (餛飩; wonton or Chinese dumplings), Baotzh (包子; Chinese buns) or Jyaotzh (餃子).

The eating of Huentuen symbolizes the breaking of Yin and release of Yang. While in Szechuan (四川) and Shantong (山東) there is a custom of drinking sheep soup, with the meaning of driving away the harsh cold.

・An Er-Dwo (安耳朵 ; literally "comfort/secure the ears")
An Er-Dwo the folk name of Jyaotzh eating custom, it was believed that if one does not eat dumplings on Dongjyh, their ears will fall off, frozen from the cold, and it's also considered unlucky for harvest.

Another saying is that the custom of eating Jyaotzh originated as remembrance for a mediciner named Jang Jong Jiing (張仲景).

・Eating Chr-Dou Jhou (赤豆粥; Chr-dou Bean Porridge)
Traditionally in China, red beans, Chr-Dou beans (赤豆; Adzuki beans) and Tao-Mu (桃木; peachwood) are believed to be able to ward off and avert evil and ill-fortune, and such items are kept for protection during festivals.

Some areas in mainland China, such as Shaanshi (陝西) province, have a custom of eating Chr-Dou Jhou, believed to bring protection against disease and demon.

Customs of Hwanan (華南; Southern China)

・Food Customs
Different from the North, Southern China has customs of eating round-shaped balls made from flour called Tangyuan (湯圓), Tangtwan (湯糰), Fen Chr-ba (粉糍粑).

The round-shape symbolizes Tien (天; Heaven) and Yang, with a meaning of reunion at the end of the year. These food also have both salty and sweet variants, with various fillings such as red and mung beans among many others.

Families gather to make these together before Dongjyh, making both red and white variants.

Aside from eating, ones with filling are used for worship rituals, while ones without filling are used for offerings to Shengming (神明) or the Gods.
The eating of Tangyuan also symbolizes growing one year elder, in accordance to the traditional Chinese age system.

・Sai Dongmi (曬冬米; literally "drying winter rice")
Sai Dongmi is a folk custom of drying water-rinsed rice under the sun during Dongjyh, used to cook porridge for anyone that gets sick after the festival.

・Gwo Dongjh (過冬紙)
A custom in the Min-Nan (閩南) and Pwu Shian (莆仙) areas of grave-sweeping during Dongjyh.

・Food 'Janbuu' (飲食占卜; Food Divination)
Using Tangyuan that symbolizes humanity, a form of diviniation is practiced for fertility.

Customs in Taiwan (臺灣), Penghu (澎湖) and Matsu (媽祖)

・Nieu Sherng-Ri (牛生日; Birthday of the Ox)
In Taiwanese folk-belief and stories, Dongjyh is believed to be the birthday of oxen in Taiwan, and in ancient times people would welcome their oxes back home for celebration.

There was a practice of making a hole in a potato, and stuffing it with Tangyuan to feed the oxes as a sign of gratitude for a year's labour, or sticking tangyuan onto the forehead, horns, back or tail of an ox, in hope that it would bring good fortune for both the livestock and its owner.

There was also a custom of pasting tangyuan onto fruit trees, and wrapping a small piece of cut-off tree bark onto the tangyuan, as prayer that the next year's harvest would be fruitful.

Aside from this, a custom of sticking a Chinese banyan branch or leaves onto the door-knockers of a home, as prayer for the family to grow strong and prosperous just like the tree itself. Chinese banyan trees are also regarded as able to ward off evil.

・Jii Muu Gou Jhai (雞母狗仔)
A Taiwanese custom of creating oxen, pig, chicken, fish, dogs, cats and other various animal or item figures out of flour as an offering item, used to pray for good harvest and fortune.

After the figures are shaped, they are dipped into the "Yuan Tzy Tzau" (圓仔糟), a basin used to make tangyuan to color the figures. After steaming, these are used in offering and worship rituals, termed "Jiidong" (祭冬; Winter Offering).

The above are what are considered the 'primary' customs of Dongjyh, different areas in China have unique, local customs or variations of the primary Dongjyh practices.

Aside from China, areas within the Sinosphere, such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam all celebrate localized variants of the original Chinese Dongjyh festival.

今日為漢曆九月九日、重陽節之日。
《易經》將「九」定為陽數。 故重陽節名「重陽」、與有「九九」、「重九」等稱。
重陽節在戰國時期已形成、自魏晉重陽氣氛日漸濃郁、到唐代被正式定為民間節日、此後歷朝歷代沿襲至今。

中國之外、中華圈內各地區 (韓國・越南・日本・琉球) 皆慶祝。

重陽節由來傳說為，

東漢時、汝南縣有名桓景一人、所住地突發大瘟疫、兩親因此而病逝。 桓景後到東南山拜師學藝、仙人費長房賜其一降妖青龍劍、他便每日勤學苦練。
一日、費長房對他言 「九月九日、瘟魔將再來、你可回以除害。」、並給桓景茱萸葉子一包與菊花酒一瓶、讓他家鄉父老登高避禍。
於是他便歸鄉、九月九日當天、桓景領著妻子兒女與鄉情父老登上附近一座山。 大家隨身帶上茱萸葉、瘟魔不敢近身、又喝菊花酒、避染瘟疫。

桓景最後劍刺瘟魔。 後、汝河兩岸百姓便將此事流傳下、重陽節與其習俗就從此而起。

除此、也具有另關重陽習俗原為漢宮廷之辟邪延壽習俗之說法。

重陽節主要特殊習俗含，

敬老:
「九九」諧音「久久」、代表老人高壽、因此重陽節出現敬老活動之習俗。

配戴茱萸:
古人將茱萸作為驅邪神物、每逢重陽、人人佩戴。 後世稱之為「茱萸會」、或稱重陽節為「茱萸節」。

古人佩帶具有山茱萸、吳茱萸、食茱萸三種。 其中前兩種為中藥藥材、有潤肝燥脾、溫中下氣、除濕解鬱、去疾殺蟲等功能。

賞菊飲菊花酒：
重陽節九月九日、九九與菊酒諧音。故有喝菊花酒之習俗。
九月時秋天菊花盛開、故九月傳統漢曆內也稱「菊月」。

吃重陽糕與節日食品：
唐宋時講究重陽食糕、因「糕」與「高」同音，古人相信「百事皆高」、所以重陽節登高時吃糕象徵步步登高。
重陽糕形狀不定、所吃糕點包含紅龜粿、花糕等多類。

除了重陽糕、重陽節也有食花煎、花菜、茄子與烤乳豬等食品之習。

登高：
重陽登高習俗始於西漢、除了重陽由來傳說之影響、重陽節前後天氣漸涼、為登山活動的好時。

放「鷂」(風箏)

除了以上、中國各地具有豐富多樣因地而異之獨特重陽節習俗。

Today is the ninth day of the ninth month in the traditional Hann Calendar, the day of the Chongyang festival (重陽節).
The Book of Yih-Jing or I-Ching (易經) defines Jeou (九, Nine) is defined as a Yang (陽; part of the Yin-Yang system) number.

Thus, this is how the Chongyang Festival obtained the name of "Chongyang" (重陽, Double-Yang), and also its many other names such as "Jeou-Jeou" (九九, lit. Nine-Nine) and "Chong-Jeou" (重九, Double-Nine).

The Chongyang festival was already formed by the time of the Janngwo era (戰國時期; Warring States Era), and became better refined in the time of the Wey (魏) and Jinn (晉) Dynasties.
During the Tang Dynasty (唐朝), Chongyang became an official folk festival, and has been passed down by the later dynasties, to the modern day.

Aside from China, other areas within the Sinosphere (Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Ryukyu/Okinawa) also celebrate local variations of the Chongyang Festival.

The origin of Chongyang comes with a legend,
During the Dong Hann (東漢) or Eastern Han Dynasty era, there was a man named Hwan Jiing (桓景) who lived in Ruu Nan (汝南縣 ; an area in Central-Eastern China).
One day an epidemic suddenly broke out, and Hwan Jiing's parents died as a result of the epidemic. He later went to Dongnan mountain (東南山) to become a disciple and learn the arts.

A shian (仙; sage, immortal) named Fey Charng Farng (費長房) gave Hwan Jiing a Jiann or Chinese sword named the "Jiang Yiau Chinglong Jiann" (降妖青龍劍), and he practiced day and night to refine himself and his knowledge.

One day, Fey Charng Farng told Hwan Jiing that the Wuen Mo (瘟魔; Demon of Disease) shall come again on the 9th day of the 9th month, and that he was allowed to return home to eradicate the demon, while also giving him a pouch of dogwood leaves and a bottle of Jyuhua Jeou (菊花酒, Chrysanthemum Wine) to allow his townspeople to stay safe during the plague.

And so Hwan Jiing returned to his hometown, and on the 9th day of the 9th month, led his family and townspeople up a nearby mountain, along with instructing everyone to wear dogwood leaves on their clothing, and to take a drink of the given wine to protect from disease.

Hwan Jiing later killed the demon with his Jiann, and this tale was passed down generation-to-generation by the people living near the Ruu river, eventually forming the festival of Chongyang.

There is also another possible origin of Chongyang which describes it as an Imperial custom believed to ward off evil spirits and aid longevity, practiced within the Hann Imperial Court.

The main unique customs of Chongyang include,

Chrysanthemum viewing and drinking Jyuhua Jeou:
The Chongyang Festival falls on the 9th day of the 9th month, at a time when Chrysanthemum flowers bloom, thus a flower-viewing custom was created.

In the traditional Hann calendar, the 9th month is also called "Jyu-Yueh" (菊月), the month of Chrysanthemums.

Eating Chongyang-Gau (重陽糕; Chongyang Cakes) and other festive food:
During the Tang and Song Dynasty, the custom of eating festive cakes unique to Chongyang was better developed and refined.
In Chinese, the word for "cake" (糕) and "high" (高) are nearly identical, thus eating Chongyang-Gau symbolizes achieving progress, advancement, and success.

Chongyang-Gau come in many shapes and forms, with different varieties from all over China.

Aside from Chongyang-Gau, food such as eggplants, Hua Jian (花煎) and Hua Tsay (花菜) among other festive food, also differing depending on region.

Denggau (登高):
Originating from the Shi-Hann (西漢) or Southern Han Dynasty era, denggau is a traditional custom of hiking or climbing heights or mountains, also practiced during other festivals.

Wearing herbal leaves:
In ancient China, herbs like dogwood among others were believed to be a charm able to ward off evil spirits.
Thus people wore pouches often contained herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Aside from these, activities to show respect to the eldery, flying Yao (鷂) or kites and other many various region-specific customs exist throughout all of China.
