'Star Wars' and 'Jurassic World' headline $11 billion record-setting box office

Pack "Star Wars," "Jurassic World" and "Avengers" into one year and you'll get the biggest North American box office haul in history.

The late addition of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" helped make 2015 the highest-earning domestic year ever as the North American box office total surpassed $11 billion on Tuesday, according to Rentrak, a film tracking firm. The previous record was $10.92 billion in 2013.

"Hollywood built the perfect box office beast in 2015, with one hit movie after the next, week after week, exceeding expectations with a regularity that made it look easy," Rentrak senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said in a statement. "With records falling like dominoes, the revenues just kept building as audiences flooded multiplexes in huge numbers."
Highlights included "Star Wars" setting an opening weekend record with $248 million; "Jurassic World" posting the biggest June opening weekend ($208.8 million) to finish the year with $652 million; and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" turned their $191.3 million May opening into $459 million total.

Other big contributors were "Furious 7" with $353 million, Clint Eastwood's "American Sniper" with $350 million, and "Fifty Shades of Grey" with $166.2 million.
