ABOUT Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars

The community hub for organizing matches over Dolphin netplay!

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars is a crossover fighting game developed by Eighting and published by Capcom. The game features characters from both Capcom's video game franchises and various anime series produced by Tatsunoko Production. The game was originally released in Japan for arcades and the Wii video game console in December 2008 as Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes. Following high demand from international fans, Capcom worked with Tatsunoko to resolve international licensing issues and a localization, Ultimate All-Stars, was released for the Wii in North America, Japan, and Europe in January 2010, featuring additional characters and an online mode.

In Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, players engage in combat with a team of two characters or with a single giant character and attempt to knock out their opponents. It is the seventh Capcom-designed installment in their Vs. fighting game series, which includes the Marvel vs. Capcom and Capcom vs. SNK series, and the first to be fully rendered in 3D graphics. The game is set in a 2.5D environment; characters fight in a two-dimensional arena, but character models and backgrounds are rendered in three-dimensional graphics. The game is designed around a simplified three-button attack system, which was inspired by the simplistic control schemes commonly used by both the Vs. series and the Wii.

The game received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its approachable gameplay for newcomers and depth for veteran players. However, reviewers had mixed experiences with its online component, and found Arcade mode lacking in replay value. According to the game's producer, Ryota Niitsuma, development difficulties and a lack of Wii fighting games were the reasons for its platform exclusivity; however, multiple critics questioned if that was the best choice. Capcom announced in April 2010 that the game was a commercial success.

A new netplay setup guide has been created on the subreddit and will continue to be maintained there, as the Shoryuken forums have been archived.

New Developments

Dolphin has undergone many significant changes since the 5.0-321 build that used to be featured on this page. Three important features have been added since: Ubershaders, Asynchronous Shader Compilation, and Immediately Present XFB.

Ubershaders are a direct software emulation of the Wii's hardware graphics processing pipeline. This allows for users with dedicated graphics cards to avoid shader compilation stuttering that's prominent in games like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. However, using Ubershaders exclusively is relatively demanding. If you have a CPU with good context switching performance, equivalent to an Intel Core i5-6500 or an AMD Ryzen 3 1200, you should able to run Ubershaders asynchronously without sacrificing any performance. We recommend that you only utilize this feature if you have a graphics card equivalent to or better than NVIDIA's GTX 760 or AMD's Radeon R7 265. Integrated Intel graphics users should avoid using Ubershaders.

Asynchronous Shader Compilation allows for the game's graphics processing to continue operating at full speed, even if the shaders needed by the game haven't been fully compiled. While this does cause some visual glitches, and can outright crash games like F-Zero GX, it offers an enormous performance boost for all hardware configurations, including Android devices. This makes Tatsunoko vs. Capcom playable on recent Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S9, OnePlus 7T, Google Pixel 3, Razer Phone 2, and both generations of the ASUS ROG Phone.

Immediately Present XFB is a hack that skips the Wii's natural buffering and most video interface emulation, which allows for a dramatic drop in input latency. In some tests, Dolphin with Immediately Present XFB enabled was able to process inputs up to 13 milliseconds faster[dolphin-emu.org] than an actual Wii console connected to a CRT display. This means that, network latency permitting, modern Dolphin netplay on an LCD display can be just as responsive as playing offline on the Wii.

Naturally, this means that all modern North American major tournaments featuring Tatsunoko vs. Capcom have moved to Dolphin as the competitive standard. We hope that, with greater controller compatibility and a wide range of supported hardware, this new level of accessibility will help us forge a brighter future for the game's competitive scene.
