Battlefield 3 - Venice Unleashed - An Alphadog experiment.

Y'all,
Most of you are likely unfamiliar with the Venice Unleashed project:
Modders have for years attempted to gain some control over server hosting and modding for the Battlefield 3 Frostbyte engine, and have finally managed to cut through the red tape, allowing us to host our own dedicated BF3 servers and create/add mods as we see fit.

One of the best FPS modern warfare mods ever created was the Reality Mod for the old Battlefield 2; Reality Mod was a semi-realistic take on a military FPS that was more approachable than for example ARMA and therefore appealed to players that wanted more realism without over-complication.
Although Reality Mod has not yet been released for the BF3 game, it is in the pipeline, but until then we can still enjoy the original BF3 game tweaked to a more individual taste.


First of all, you are required to own Battlefield 3 either on Origin or Steam (the latter should connect to the Origin API and authenticate as an Origin game).

If you already own the base BF3 game on Origin but want the extra DLCs and maps, you can upgrade it >> here <<[www.origin.com]

Premium edition includes the 5 DLCs which will give you a total of 20 maps.

In addition to the game, you will need to download and register the Venice Unleashed client >> here <<[veniceunleashed.net]

Once VU is installed and you've logged into it, follow their instructions on how to link your Origin account with the VU client and you're good to go.

So...

1) Download and Install Origin >> download link<<[www.origin.com]
2) Launch and log into Origin
3) Install BF3 (either via Steam or Origin)
4) Download and install the VU client >> download link <<[veniceunleashed.net]
5) Register an account on VU >> signup link <<[veniceunleashed.net]
6) With Origin launched, start the VU client and log in with your newly created VU credentials.
7) Your Origin and VU account should now automatically link
8) Create your soldier in VU, go to the server browser and find the Alphadogs server (use the filter option above the list of servers)
9) Join and play.

Note: Once you've linked your VU and Origin accounts, you do not need to launch Origin again in the future. When you want to play BF3, all you need to do is launch VU and start the game from there.

• The game is old, pushing 10 years ... so naturally the graphics isn't going to wow you. The positive is that it has a lot lower requirements than most modern games, so you can run it on fairly low spec gear.
  
  
• The game doesn't (yet?) offer community created maps. However with a full set of DLCs, it has 20 of some of the best maps ever created (several have been ported to Insurgency such as Metro and Karkand) and in addition to that offers 8 different game modes[battlefield.fandom.com], some including vehicles.
  
  
• The game has destructive environments, something Insurgency still can't manage to figure out, which means as battle rages on, going through buildings rather than around them becomes a viable option.
  
  
• It is Player vs Player only, and some of the game modes aren't really particular interesting with less than 30-40 players. There is no bot support (yet?).
  
  
• From a server admin perspective, it is a dream to work with compared to the clusterf**k that is the Insurgency Sandstorm server.
  
  
• It STILL looks pretty damn good for its age.

Well yes...currently there's a single test server running mostly just to get familiar with how to configure it and what mods to add. You can find it in the VU server browser (filter on "alphadogs"); ask for pw if you don't already know it.
The test server is currently only running Squad Rush mode and is configured as a hardcore server (with minimap).

We are working on a more permanent (US based) setup and will post it here once it's ready.
