Viva o Rei, Para o Império

In 1179, King Afonso I was named King of Portugal by the Pope after reconquering Coimbra. This was the first time Portugal had been recognized as a nation, as previously it was a county in the Kingdom of Asturias. In 1250, Portugal completed their Reconquista of the western Iberia peninsula. It would take their neighbors, Castile and Aragon, another 200 years to complete the same feat.

In 1386, the Treaty of Windsor was signed between Portugal and England, cementing an alliance that would last into even present day. Henri the Navigator would eventually lead portugal into an expaditionary age unrivaled by any other power. From a 1420 navigational mistake to 1436, the Maderia and Canaries were colonized to add onto the Portuguese Empire already encompassing Cueta, a major port inside of Morocco.
