ABOUT Greater Assyria

𖢗 ܫܠܵܡܵܐ ܠܟܼܘܢ - Shlama 'lokhon ܞ

Modern Assyrians are an ethnic group who trace their ancestry to ancient Assyria and modern-day Iraq (Mesopotamia). They are primarily based in Northern Iraq, with diaspora communities in Syria, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. Today, there are sizeable Assyrian communities in many countries around the world, including the United States, Europe, and Australia.
They speak varieties of Neo-Aramaic, mainly a dialect of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic (Syriac), as well as Mesopotamian & Levantine Arabic, and Kurdish and/or Persian dialects.

EthnicityThe Assyrians are predominately Christian indigenous Aramaic ethnic-speaking group native to Assyria, a geographical region in Western Asia.

HomelandAssyria is recognised as the homeland of the Assyrians; located in Upper Mesopotamia currently divided between present-day Northern Iraq, Southeastern Turkey, Northwestern Iran and Northeast of Syria. The Assyrian Triangle had the greatest concentration of indigenous Assyrians in both their native land and the world prior to the 2014 invasion of Iraq by ISIS, and was the proposed borders for an autonomous Assyrian state following World War I. (Urmia Manifesto of the United Free Assyria - Freydun Atturaya 1917)

PopulationEstimates of the Assyrian population vary, but 2-5 million is the most acknowledged value. The census for Assyrians is very difficult to determine, as their host countries like to underestimate the number of Assyrians as also different terms may be applied as Syriacs, Arameans, Chaldeans Identity and/or absorbed within Local or other Christian population residing in their territories.

HistoryThe Assyrians have a long and rich history dating back to ancient Mesopotamia, They were among the earliest civilizations in the world, with a complex and highly developed culture that included art, literature, architecture, and law. The Assyrians were renowned for their military prowess, and much of their empire was built through conquests. and they have contributed significantly to the cultural and linguistic landscape of the region, Assyria was a major ancient Mesopotamian civilization which existed as a city-state from the 21st century BC to the 14th century BC, then to a territorial state, and eventually an empire from the 14th century BC to the 7th century BC. The remaining Assyrian people, who have survived in northern Mesopotamia to modern times, were gradually Christianized from the 1st century AD onward. The ancient Mesopotamian religion persisted at Assur until its final sack in the 3rd century AD, and at certain other holdouts for centuries thereafter. Due historic events such as "Massacres Diyarbekır", "Massacres of Hakkari", "Seyfo 1915" (The Assyrian Genoicde) and other events, had left the Indigenous ethnic people of Assyria a no choice, causing them to be divided and scattered around the world.
