Screenshots Tools | Basic Guide
As I've recently noticed, lots of people seem to have doubts regarding downsampling/hotsampling techniques, so I decided to come up with a quick guide in order to explain a few things about GeDoSaTo, SRWE, WBG, Cheat Engine & some UE3 stuff (as a complement).

For those who don't understand the difference between downsampling and hotsampling (one would guess that many already know that... anyways):
- Downsampling: to resize your game window to your desktop resolution (aka "fitting the big resolution in your display")
- Hotsampling: to render the game in a higher resolution, without resizing it to the desktop resolution.

Here is a list of games that can be hotsampled[www.deadendthrills.com] (Source: Dead End Thrills)
PS: Check the comments for more available games.

A fundamental factor in the quality of your screenshots is the screen resolution. The higher it is, the better the final result; also opens space for cropping because high resolution will allow you to crop images without much loss of quality.

Downsampling - method allows you to set the resolution that your monitor can not support (eg, to run the game at 2160p to 1080p monitor). Then video driver scales the image to the size of your monitor.

The most popular methods of downsampling:
  • custom resolution settings video
  • DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) - Dynamic super resolution technology. Only for Nvidia video cards.
  • WBG
  • Gedosato
  • SoftTH207 - sometimes for games that do not work with gedosato

Once done with the resolution, you must make the most of the quality of graphics. To find this game on Wiki[pcgamingwiki.com] and considering all the technical aspects of the game:

- if the game is supported by its own resolution and filter settings; if not, then you need to put in the driver settings in the forced mode. (anisotropic filtering should always be placed on the 16x, since it has almost no effect on performance)
- game supports windowed mode or not
- whether there is a limiter
- config file location

You will also need software to capture screenshots in PNG format, ie without compression. Here the choice is quite extensive. Can be used:msi afterburner, fraps, printscreen.

Optionally, you can set the shaders in the game folder (usually installed in a folder with the exe file) reshade[reshade.me] and mastereffect reborn[reshade.me]

The final recommendation. In some games there windowed mode, and it is, but the program to scale (approx. SRWE - Simple Runtime Window Editor) can not stretch the image to fill the screen. In this situation, can help greatly D3DLookingGlass. This utility helps to run the game in windowed mode forced, in some cases, save from relegation game at constant pressing alt + tab

GeDoSaTo[blog.metaclassofnil.com]

Illustrated Guide[imgur.com]

Old method and worse one, imho. It only works with DX9-32bit applications (keep in mind that it won't work with 64-bit applications).

How to use: Basically, you'll need to do few and quick steps.
1st) Ensure to include the game in your "Whitelist", as well as its executable;
2nd) Customize your resolutions to whatever you want (i.e. 3840x2160@60Hz)
3rd) Edit your capture keybindings;
4th) Launch the game - all your resolutions will be available in the menu

PS: If, only IF you're playing a built-in UE3/UDK game, you'll need to do a different step.

If UE3, you'll need to edit the game INI files and add ''SetRes'' (Set Resolution) command, exactly how it is at config/GeDoSaTo_user.ini., otherwise, it won't work.

Bindings=(Name="F3",Command="setres 3000x4000",Control=True)
Bindings=(Name="F4",Command="setres 5120x2880",Control=True)
[...]

If UDK, you'll be able to enable debug console with ("), though you can use ''setres 1111X1111" (Whatever resolution you want. And it also might be on config/GeDoSaTo_user.ini)

SRWE - Simple Runtime Window Editor[www.nexusmods.com]

Some resolutions profiles I usually use[www.dropbox.com]

Illustrated Guide[imgur.com]

Pretty much my favorite tool AND the easier to use since it can downsample/hotsample.

How to use: It's quite simple - launch the game and, if downsampling, resize it to your desktop's custom resolution you've created, centralize everything, remove borders and you're done; if hotsampling, just type whatever resolution you want.

WBG - WIndows Borderless Gaming[westechsolutions.net]

Illustrated Guide[imgur.com]

As simple and similar to SRWE as possible, though restricted to hotsampling.

How to use: Launch the game, add the game window to the application, type in the resolution you want - hit apply and you're done.

Cheat Engine[cheat-engine.br.uptodown.com]

Illustrated Guide[imgur.com]

Most people have some issues with it, even though it is as simple as the others... no secrets.
After launching the game you want to apply the cheats on, open its executable in Cheat Engine then add the CE Table you want to use. In most cases, the tables come with bindings for Freecam, FOV control, PlayersOnly etc. Just hit the correct keys in-game and be happy.

TexMod[forums.guru3d.com]

Works to disable grain/vignetting on most UE3 games, just follow the steps on this thread, nothing special.

The guide is very simple and it might have something wrong, but I hope this can help you guys & gals. If anyone has any doubts... Just ask.

Special thanks to Lunanella for lending me a hand ♥

Thank you Fency! Well my misstake with Remember Me have been the binding then. The resolutions I have keybinded worked so far. The screen resolution is way smaller but I think that is because of the windowed mode.
Great guide. Thanks a lot! Will try it with Remember Me tonight. :steamhappy:

Try it by yourself, though. I won't help you :hmm::heart:

Checking it now! Will come back later tonight to let you know. ^^
Thanks very much I think I'll give SRWE a try this weekend.

Edit: Is the SRWE method superior to the classical downsampling from the Neogaf forums (which I am using for months)?

Would say so.. you've done driver downsampling right?

Actually, downsampling with SRWE only works with custom resolutions from NeoGAF (if is that what you mean). Hotsampling! is different because you don't need to use any custom resolutions, you'll be able to render any resolution without fitting it to your desktop's.

Then I can't use SRWE.. because my retarded computer doesn't let me create a custom resolution^^

Oh I understand. Yes I have my custom resolutions, downsampled drivers - what I just said here doesn't make any sense.

Your custom resolutions shows up in the game menu, don't they? Though, the image would get off the monitor borders, SRWE does the ''fitting'' for you. Also, if using custom AR (i.e 3:4, 2:1 and such), you'll need to use ''remove borders'' as well.
