Here are the steps:

• Open the file you uploaded.
  
• Switch to object mode
  
• Alt+S to clear armature scale
  
• Select all
  
• Export selection (2 objects)
  
• Compile with this QC:

Alt+S is all you need to do. Did you export the mesh after clearing the scale or just the animation?

Sorry, I forgot about this. The problem is that you've scaled the armature. If you reset its scale to 1,1,1 and instead use the $scale command in your QC everything will be fine.

The error you're seeing is fixed if you get the latest source from GitHub[github.com]. I really need to ship a new version!

If you only want to edit the mesh you can create a mesh item and swap the datablock. If you want to edit the object itself you'll need to link it to the scene via the Python console.

The two meshes fail because they contain duplicated faces which are killed by Remove Doubles, and that causes the data transfer modifier to fail. Unfortunately there is no way to have blender remove merge just the vertices unless I loop over everything in Python and do it manually.

Yes, the first mesh is very messed up. The eyebrows are OK but the eyes match the wrong vertices and only half of the mouth is properly animated. It's a problem even if I merge both halves of the face together.

There isn't really a fix for this. VTA is just a horrible, horrible file format and the chopping and changing of mesh data that occurs when importing to Blender import prevents me from ever mapping SMD vertices to VTA vertices accurately. The best solution is to get hold of DMX sources sources somehow, which don't suffer from these problems.

The model is split into multiple bodygroups, but there is only one VTA which covers the whole thing. It's an obscure case with an easy workaround (import the VTA multiple times) so I wouldn't worry.
