I have ran SLI/Crossfire for years in multiple gaming PCs and laptops. Most of the time it is not worth the additonal price tag for multiple cards unless you primarily run a game that truely supports sli/crossfire. My experience is that there are three outcomes to running SLI/Crossfire.

1. No Support: You will find that if a game doesn't not support SLI/Crossfire your performance may suffer as much as 50% of what a single card should be when you can run the game at all. The only real fix is to force the computer to run on one card and even then it doesn't always run as well as if you removed the additional card(s). 2. Partial/Basic Support: You will also find that most games that support SLI/Crossfire do so rather lazily. In these cases you will see 0-15% improvement in performance but the game will run.

3. Rare are the games like the Battlefield series where you find the developers have optimized for SLI/Crossfire and you see as much as 80% increases in performance depending on both the number of cards used and which cards are used.
