58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot - "The Black Cuffs"

The regiment was raised in 1755 by Colonel Robert Anstruther as the 60th Regiment of Foot. In 1756 the regiment changed its name into 58th Regiment of Foot.

After successful campaign in the colonies the regiment was moved to the West Indies with regiment taking part to Battle of Havana in summer 1762. The next post for the regiment was Gibraltar, regiment being part of the garrison from 1770. Regiment was part of the besieged forces during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783).

58th Regiment of Foot earned its own country designation in August 1782 with the regiment now being called the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot.

The regiment fought again in the West Indies during the French Revolutionary Wars and was part of the invasion force in Martinique.

In 1795 the 58th returned into European theater and took part into the capture of Minorca in 1798. In 1801 the regiment was transferred to Egypt where it fought the French forces at Abukir, Alexandria and Cairo. The regiment was supplemented by second battalion in 1804.

1st Battalion of the 58th was deployed in Sicily during 1805 and saw action at Battle of Maida. Then the battalion advanced onto Calabria raiding shipping yards at Diamante. The first battalion was deployed to Portugal in Spring 1812 and it fought in Battle of Castalla and Siege of Tarragona. After the campaign in Portugal the regiment was tranferred to North America to fight in the War of 1812. The battalion fought in the Battle of Plattsburgh in late 1814.
