The polycount update smacked our servers back to the stone age; they keep crashing unless I remove all the mods. We will be working tonight to fix things, but for now things are VANILLA.

You may have heard about Minecraft at some point, the indy game that has exploded in popularity the last few months. Apparently it got too popular for the little server that was hosting the updates and the whole thing imploded earlier today after a patch. While the sole creator, Notch, works to set up a new server he has made Minecraft free to play!

I highly recommend you check it out. The basic concept of the game is you are dropped in the middle of a randomly generated world that goes infinitely in every horizontal direction and have to try to build you home and survive the monsters that spawn every night. Its all about emergent gameplay, with new facets being added usually every week. (Notch hasn't been able to do so as frequently the last month or so because of business meetings with valve and conventions and business stuff. He is officially back on his normal schedule for the most part now though)

Okay, so if you want to play these custom maps you have 2 things to do:

Install Steam L4D2 Addon Support:
If you look in your library page in steam, there are actually 4 tabs underneath it; Games, Media, Tools, and Downloads. Click tools and find "Left 4 Dead 2 Addon Support" Install it. Its smaller than it says it is.

Install the maps you wish to play:

Before installing, look in the addons folder to make sure you do not have earlier versions of any of these maps. If you don't delete the earlier version the maps will NOT work. Download the files you want, open the zip(s), and double click the vpk file(s) inside. If that doesnt work, put the file(s) in C/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/common/Left 4 Dead 2/Left4Dead2/addons
If that folder does not exist, make one.

Install the files the same way you did above, though for the original survivors you can either choose to replace one character or replace them all. There are 5 vpks in there to choose from. The SI one is more straight forward.

For those that don't know what Teamspeak is, its a lightweight program that allows high quality voice and text chat with everybody on it, no matter what other programs you have open. Go to teamspeak.com to download the latest client. There is usually at least one admin online there, making this a perfect way to ask for help with problems in the gameserver. Or even just to keep up with your 3PG friends in a friendly place.
