It's pretty much what the rumors have said: it's a screen with detachable controllers; can be used on the go or placed in a dock hooked up to a larger monitor.
And it runs cartridges, because discs are bloody stupid in handhelds.
The controllers are called Joy-Con(L) and Joy-Con(R), there's also a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
You can attach the Joy-Con's to the Joy-Con grip.

Eh, in my own opinion, it's the lack of games rather than the hardware that truly hurted the Wii U. It's simple. Why do people buy video game consoles? It's not for their specs, not for their features, but rather for the games. The Wii U lacked that. It have some great first-party games but lacked sufficient third party support. It did not help that it was poorly marketed.

Lack of 3rd party sopport was because of the hardware though. It was like asking them to support a last-gen system with no future alongside the shiny next-gen ones.
