Except Mass Effect is actually a game and not an interactive movie.
To be fair, it's near impossible to make a video game with choices that matter.
Only because of the focus on presentation. If the scope of the gameplay itself were smaller with less or no voice acting, then it'd be much easier to create more varied ways for the story to unfold.

Um, what? The choices made in Walking Dead actually have an impact, although that's more or less your relations with the other characters than the overall story.
Have you done more than one playthrough of a Telltale game?

Your choices don't matter because the same overall thing happens.

Examples from season one:
Whoever you save at the end of ep1 doesn't add anything to the story (because there's nothing they can both add) except that they both have good relationships with Lee. This way, the player will feel sad when they both die in ep3.
It doesn't matter what you do, Kenny's son will not die until ep3. I forget if Hershel's son dies in ep1, but either way, you never see him again.
It doesn't matter if you loot the car because everyone else is going to anyway since that guy has to lose his family for the final confrontation.
If you choose not to kill that old shit in ep2, Kenny does it anyway.
When you choose whether or not to cut off Lee's arm, all it changes are how a few cutscenes play out.
