As for multiplayer, well, it's dead, though there's unofficial bot support, though you'll need the latest patch that somehow wasn't installed with the Steam copy.

Right now the big three names in the space sim market are Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous, and No Man's Sky. NMS being the only one I haven't played.

Star Citizen, for those that don't know, is an entirely crowdsourced space sim by Chris Roberts, creator of the old Wing Commander games. This game still has a long way to go, but it's finally starting to look promising for those who stuck in for the long haul.

Elite Dangerous was also kickstarted, but ended up having a much smaller budget than the 120 million of Star Citizen. It was released december 2014 and has gone through significant changes since then. I haven't played it recently, but I clocked in at least 200 hours in the non-steam version before getting bored. I would reccommend it if you want a space sim which isn't No Man's Sky.

No Man's Sky I HEAR was an absolute failure.

What do you guys think about all this? You think space sims should come back?
