Same with Medic in TF2.
It's worse with mercy IMO
With medic you can defend yourself with your needle gun.
With mercy, on the other hand, if someone jumps you, you may as well bend over and ask them to be gentle...

Healer is the easiest role in every multiplayer game.
No matter what words you use to describe your attempts at dodging enemy shots or whatever.

Mercy's pistol does pretty good damage, she's better at defending herself than Medic is.
Not really, it takes 5 headshots and a melee attack to kill a 200 hp target who would be easily dodging the bullets as they move to slowly. All the other classes can do that damage in 3 shots/ bursts at most.

And apparently Medic's needle gun does do damage? More damage than Soldier or Scout? Huh.
Medic's needle gun has a reasonable dps IMO due to its rapid firerate. There's been plenty of occasions when I was playing him where I've killed someone who's gotten to close for comfort with it.
Mercy's pistol fires a quite slow moving projectile that does very little damage with a very low firerate. She has the 4th lowest dps in the game, two of the classes below her can boost their dps above her (Symmetra and Zarya) while the other is Torbjorn. And that's if you manage to land every shot which is hard to do with the projectile speed and slow firerate.

Except the Needlegun does 9-11 damage a hit leading to 110 damage after a full second if they all hit and deal 10 damage. Mercy's pistol discharges 5 rounds a second dealing 20 each. Equaling 100 damage if you score no headshots but they all hit. But a single headshot means she deals more damage to her foes than medic if all his projectiles hit. at 120.(unless all his needles deal their max damage with spread on 11 which is a 33.3% chance per needle) It takes 5 headshots alone just to kill every non-tank hero. Besides Bastion, Reaper, and Mei. She also has 20 shots in a mag and a reload time of a second. Also unlike Medic, can fly towards nearby teammates and regens health at a tick of 20 a second after not being hurt for 3 seconds, allowing her to quickly recover after a fight. I mained Medic and I love the Needlegun, thought and still do think it's the coolest shit. But Mercy's pistol is a way better self defense tool if you are capable of aiming and predicting of enemy movement.

My problem is that the pistol's projectiles (they're too slow to be bullets) move far too slowly and are extremely easy to dodge meaning you'll really only ever land 2 shots before dying if your lucky. Which isn't good enough considering its her primary source of damage. They need increase the projectile speed to give mercy a fighting chance if someone jumps her IMO because right now, as I said, you may as well bend over and ask them to be gentle.

Regarding flying to teammates. At my level, 112, there is never anyone to fly to as they all just piss off in different directions, leaving me very few escape routes. Even if I do tell them to stick together they just ignore me and throw themselves at he enemy. Even then, if I do manage to get away, the person attacking me just follows me and kills me because my teammates don't understand that you should probably defend the mercy who had 10 hp who has a Winston/Tracer/Genji on her tail and not take the full health pack to heal that 5 damage you took from a tracer shooting you from across the room.

She got a much better escape/utility ability than Medic though.

From the sounds of it, you just don't know how to aim the pistol. They're projectiles, you treat them as such and you track and predict your foe, on average I hit 3-4 out of 5 shots. With a headshot or two. Her projectiles move plenty fast at the range you should end up in a fight with someone. If your team mates aren't around, you're probably doing a bad job or they all just died. Because you should be following them, not the other way around. From the sounds of it, you never use your mic and complain your teammates can't micromange your health bar, their health bar, the enemy and suddenly react to you just showing up without warning if you just escaped. It's your duty to make sure they know your current situation, most if not all the time. From the sounds of it, you're a garbage player in a garbage tier. Levels mean nothing regarding skill. She fires projectiles, treat it as such.

Maybe it is due to that. I've only played 2 multiplyer fps and both of them are class based ones (TF2 and Overwatch).
It's just frustrating when I keep dying and the chat is filled with "need healing" spam from teammates that can't be bothered to protect me nor care that I'm dead. I mean, in DOTA people atleast try to protect you if they can. I've had full health roadhogs watch genjis chase me for a good minute before I finally die and they then just let the genji walk off...

I understand, I've played DotA as well, and as I said TF2. I main support in those games too. It's upsetting, but you gotta get on your mic and make sure your team is aware, it's easy just to yell about them and call them stupid for not protecting you. I've done it in the past. But you have to make sure they know, your job is to make the game easier for them. Don't just have to with your healing. Of course, you always do get the occasional dumbass or two, or three. I understand, it'll be frustrating, but you just need to move on right after.
