Why can't humanity let go of magic?
Angels and demons and jinn and tupla and chakra and skydaddies and firedaddies oh my.

Why do you think some people have a need to hold onto superstition? You'd think we'd have moved past that a long time ago.

What drives humans to not just invent such fanciful things, but to then dedicate to it 100%?

Why?

I assume it is because there are still major portions of humanity that dont think they know it all.

God of the gaps, I am familiar with the technique.

More fun
People yearn for mystery to discover in this fully explored world to bring excitement into it.

The forefront of the sciences still offers plenty of that. Largely down to the minutia now but that's why it's so fun.
I levitate every morning to my mailbox just to ♥♥♥♥ with my neighbors.

No, I won't share my secrets.
Fear of death.
Because not enough people are into science fiction

Early Judaism doesn't really deal with the afterlife at all. That's Second-Temple period stuff.

Confucianism refuses to deal with it and the end goal of Buddhism is to end your life cycle.

It's complicated.

Because casting Fireball and watching your enemies burn is very satisfying.

Idk, maybe we'll be able to do "magic" now that we can make "time crystals". For all we know, sky's the limit with how bizarre the science I don't understand is.

I like to think there's an alternate world where you're a hero casting spells. Fusrobrah.

humanity is lazy and our brains favor association; so we want our brain's power (association) to have immediate and real properties in our lives. things independent of the mechanics of our brain, or of interfaces that could make this relationship real.

for instance a machine god that reads all your thoughts, manipulates your life based on those and your emotional state and intent, and predates humanity relativistically.

same reason edgelords tend to have a mental problem informing the behavior. it's the same process, the same belief in thoughts > actuality.

I can hero cast tacos, but you're out of range.
