Finland will remove swastikas
Finland will remove swastikas from its air force flags to avoid 'awkwardness' with Western allies.

Finland’s Air Force, now part of NATO, is preparing to phase out swastikas which still fly on a handful of unit flags, largely to avoid awkwardness with their Western allies.

The history of the Finnish air force’s use of the swastika, which since the 20th century has largely been associated with Nazi tyranny and hate groups, is more complex than at first appearance.

It’s an ancient symbol and Finland's air force began using it many years before the birth of Nazi Germany. Change has been underway for years. A swastika logo was quietly pulled off the Air Force Command’s unit emblem a few years ago.

Swastikas have remained on some Finnish air force flags, raising eyebrows among NATO allies, tourists and other foreigners who spot them at military events.

“We could have continued with this flag, but sometimes awkward situations can arise with foreign visitors. It may be wise to live with the times,” said Tomi Böhm, the new head of Karelia Air Wing air defense force, speaking to a state-run broadcaster.

Not going to lie. The tilted swastikas in a circle look way more like Nazi swastikas[www.euronews.com] than the Asian ones[www.hindusforhumanrights.org] that sometimes get conflated with Nazi swastikas ever did.

It's over...
Another piece of history lost over people not being able to distinguish symbolism and the fact hat that sign predated WW2 Germany by thousands of years.
Haha, perkele, benis

The original swastikas where never meant to mean something bad... it's just Hitler hijacked it.

So yes, it's dated now. I agree it's awkward and questionable as why still use it.

Putin of Russia even claimed Ukraine using it is the reason for his invasion and denazifying... when Russia itself has more actual neo-Nazis.

Only if you actually read history. Ukraine allied itself with Nazi Germany at the early of the war. It only later when they switch sides due to SS was pacifying the local population. Bandera was prominent leader for Ukraine-Nazi alliance with Germany. To this day, Ukraine considered Bandera a historical hero. That says a lot of things....

Yes, it says a lot of their treatment under Russia before the war.

I do know history... More than Putin does at least.

Yes, Ukraine went with Nazi Germany at one stage, but then went against it and arrested them. Putin still living in the past, similar to Trump. They have complete utter memory lost along the way.

It's the 12th Special Forces Brigade "Azov" which still uses a similar Nazi symbol they question.

It was however already reorganised back in 2014. Yet Putin of Russia invasion started in 2022. You would still have to live in the past to accept his logic. Putin however lives back in the "glory days of Russia" (soviet union) still... ditto with Trump in the "great American depression" (which he for some reason believes to be the golden days). Both have refused to update themselves with basic history of the world.

What a frightening notion.

No big deal. I wouldn't have demanded their removal, but it is an awkward symbol, especially for a country that was aligned with the Axis during WW2 (certainly not by choice, and in their defense they may be the only relevant country of the war not to have committed any major atrocities).

becuse early 20 century swastikas were very popular, similar to peace and love or rainbow symbol
