My cousin has some fish, but one is an Archerfish which takes it's own fish tank with live flies as food... It's insane. It will even spit water at you as you walk past it. It shoots water at flies and other insects to eat. Doesn't care at all for dead/fake food.

Fair enough...
There's an art of manipulation when it comes to owning a dog and training it, but it's more about freedom over learning experiences. Ideally the more they learn, the more freedom they get. Till your dog is heeling at you without even needing a lead, etc.
I love giving my dog the freedom and knowing he's not going to go crazy with it.

We convince ourselves that we give them "good lives," there are all the arguments about "they live longer" or "they're healthier" ...but all of it is measured by OUR human standards, our needs, and our expectations. They are never given an opportunity (realistically, they have no ability) to advocate for themselves or offer consent.
Spay/neuter I recognize is necessary - in order to match the needs of our human society - but still, the very first thing you do when you bring this thing into your life is chop its balls off or remove major internal organs? It's all very presumptuous, anthropocentric, and self-righteous of us, if you ask me.
Now, a human pet on the other hand - they *can* offer consent, and you can always know whether you're meeting their needs because there's no communication barrier. Aha, and now I can sense all the up-turned noses.
But how does
The tarantula I owned.
Looked like someone dumped salt and pepper all over him.
Less work.
Plants are totally a pet as such...
Plants are alive and need care, giving you a benefit for your home if you cared for them.
It's undervalued but totally still there.
