Mini Ninjas (Rated: Everyone) -
http://store.steampowered.com/app/35000/
Combines action with stealth and exploring. Suitable for all ages with only a bit of cartoon violences.
Thief Gold, The Metal Age, and/or Deadly Shadows (Rated: M) -
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/14734/
These are quite old, average graphics, but great gameplay if you like that style.
Thief 2014 (Rated: R13) -
http://store.steampowered.com/app/239160/
A great remake of the classic, with high-end graphics and gameplay. Better PC needed. Being higher quality graphics, the graphical violence level has also risen. Has some violence and sexual content.
Dishonored (Rated: M) -
http://store.steampowered.com/app/205100/
Similar to Thief 2014, great graphics and gameplay, just a little bit too short. Action packed with some swearing. Certain weapons result in dismembered limbs and blood-splatter effects.
Beyond Good and Evil (Rated: Teens) -
http://store.steampowered.com/app/15130/
Similar to the original Thief series, but more action packed, console style of gameplay. It's gotten pretty old and the graphics are low/average.
Mark of the Ninja (Rated: M) -
http://store.steampowered.com/app/214560/
This is a gem of a side scrolling action packed ninja game. Contains blood and gore violences, with strong language however.
Some others to consider: Death to Spies, Batman, Deus EX, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, etc.
Most of those games aren't suitible for his needs.
They all contain at least some stealth based gameplay and the rating is R13 or under. I would personally recommend them for the gameplay, but labelled any bad content so he could clearly make his own decision (violences / swearing / mild sexual content - each to their own judgement). You probably get worst just switching on the TV. Just gave some options, but what do you suggest?
At least I did not suggest Dishonored. I mean, seriously? That game ticks off nearly every mature warning alone.
Well as far as I can see, you didn't suggest anything...
As for DisHonored: http://www.esrb.org/ratings/synopsis.jsp?Certificate=32404
Yeah, it's one of the higher up ones (Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, Strong Language), I probably wouldn't recommend to a 10 year old, but for 12+ should be fine. It's rated M (Mature) meaning 15+ or younger with parents supervision. If you watch TV, you would get worst. Hell, even the Spongebob cartoon on TV contains sexual references, subliminal messages focused towards adult humour and animated violence. You must encounter it one day. It's not like the main focus of the game however.
No advice is still better than bad advice, he didn't ask for your pet games, but games that match his requirements. Even your link said Dishonored is rated at over 17! If I was a censor, I sure as hell would not rate a game that let's you slit the throats of half-naked hookers or depict bodies ripped apart by rats as being suitable for 12 year olds.
The fact there is "worse on TV" isn't an argument.
Video Game violence is very cartoony. its nothing like the intro to saving private ryan or something similar, which is actually worthy of an 18+ rating.
Check things on a case by case basis.
Now I would recommend some, but im really not sure what your looking for exactly. Stealth alone is a pretty wide genre.
Also, the Thief reboot.
