Someone send me a FR, I accepted, and all of a sudden they try sending me a link (didn't click it) while explaining that evidently someone is impersonating me and said impersonator fleeced them out of money. They wished to have me show them my bank account information to authenticate my sincerity of not being said impersonator. Rather confused by the matter as Steam is not my primary gaming platform. Was this a scam attempt, or did someone somehow actually impersonate me and scam an individual?

That's how they scam people, scaremongering tactics, great job at not clicking the link they sent you, that can redirect you anywhere. Have a good read through the links posted above by cSg|mc-Hotsauce, they will give you more info on the type of scams around.
