(Violent Video games) First they came for the fan service, but you did not speak up...
First they can for the fan service, but you did not speak up, for you were not into fan service...

Now they are coming for Violent video games and depictions of gambling:

YouTube is updating its policies to age-restrict more content containing video game scenes with "graphic violence," the company announced on Tuesday. Starting November 17, the updates will prevent accounts under 18 and signed-out users from watching videos with games focused on showing "realistic human characters" involved in scenes of "mass violence against non-combatants" or torture. It'll also cover online gambling, even when no actual money is involved.

"Our policies are designed to evolve alongside the digital world," the statement read. "We're making these updates to keep pace with new trends, like gambling with digital goods, and to more closely align our guidelines for mature content with industry standards."

I doubt it will be long before rule 15 is leveraged to force this type of change on the Steam Store as well.

They never came for fan service, thats a bald faced lie.
Yeah, youtube is getting cooked.
Their policy over the last few years has been absolutely horrible. It all started with the removal of dislikes and it all went downhill from there.

False.

Many fan service games, with zero pornography in them, are forced behind the AO curtain simply because they have an anime aesthetic. Meanwhile, games like Cyberpunk 2077 (that are filled with porn), are not behind that same curtain.

So you are factually and objectively wrong.
Youtube have been doing absurd things with their policies for years now, this is literally nothing new for them, it's just more of the same nonsense.

Meanwhile, American media prohibits the use of swear words and has done for decades.

It's absurd, but it's not what you're aiming for, OP

It's ok, I'm closer to retirement than 18.

Most of us are, but as Steam has already demonstrated, they are more happy to simply delist or region lock games than they are to implement an age verification system.

In other words: they're still being sold on Steam, with the main difference being a different rating.

See, this is in direct contrast to all the doom scenarios that people spouted before: "They're taking fan service and pr0n games away!", none of that happened.

They never "came" for adult games in the way people claimed. So yah, this is just building on the initial fear mongering.
What is it with people and conflating games with sexual content in them (Cyberpunk, Baldur’s Gate 3) and games where the primary focus is sexual content (especially taboo or borderline illegal sexual content)?
Only a minor or an ignorant think that writed by youtube was about sex or porn. So that make me understand they do the right move; you can't show things to kids who don't know what they are looking at.
What's youtubes changes got to do with Steam? Everyone knows youtube has been going downhill since they removed the "dont be evil" motto.

The "fan service" where games get removed is the ones depicting minors in inappropriate manners. The rest of the games are sold without issues if they dont violate laws or valves content rules. Been quite a few "theyre coming for x y z next" but nothing happens. Google being google is of zero surprise to anyone that's been watching how google has been operating.

Yeah I don’t like how sexual representation of minors is getting so easily swept under the banner of “free speech” as “fan service”.
Because Steam is known for copying what YouTube does.
"D.Flame casts Molehill Into Mountain"
It's not effective.

edit: and yeah, Youtube's always been silly with it's rules. I haven't been able to watch a good % of game trailers on there for years, because "omg, evil content! Age gate!" and I refuse to make an account. Trailers I've seen before or from other sources, and that I know aren't "icky". Like Control or Skyrim.
