Are there any save files where you install steam?
I have a C drive where I installed windows and I have a D drive that I use purely for storage. I plan to switch to linux soon so I'm just backing up everything and now I want to back up my save files that don't have steam cloud. I already know where the save files on my C drive are and have backed them up but are there any save files in the file location that you choose to have steam install itself on normally?

All I know is that your games MUST be on the SAME Drive as your Steam Library

This depends on the game. Usually, they store their save files in the /MyDocuments/MyGames directory. However, Unity-based games have their own save location, and a few (older) games store the saves in their install folders.

I guess that you'll need to check every game that you've installed. Relying solely on steam cloud for backup purposes is usually a bad idea.

I thought you meant Steam only games

I've already gone through my documents folder and appdata and roaming folders but I think there are just a few more I missed that could be in the D drive where I set steam to install itself when I first downloaded it. Just trying to clear that file now

Just google "game name" and "save location". That should be enough for most games.

Saves can be in
Users\Username\AppData (in any of the 3 Folder)
Users\Username\My Games
Users\Username\Documents
Steam\userdata\(your Steam ID)\(game ID)
Steam\steamapps\common (in the game Folder)

Bit confused by this. I have my Steam games saved over 2 different drives and it asks me each time which one I want to save to. One is an SSD.

Well, that's because there's no single standard on where saves are supposed to be located. Some games don't even let you choose a location.

Again, every single game I install asks me which drive I wish to use. There is nothing from Steam which does not allow me to install where I want. And yes, I have a lot of games. I keep about 50 installed at any one time.

I choose to install everything on my D drive yet steam still installs files on my C drive. If you have only one hard drive then yes youre right about yourself but if not then you might want to look through your drive with the OS on it if thats not where steam is installed cause you'll find some stuff in there
Go to any game in your library and then right click - Properties - Installed files and half way down you will see the option to change the installed folder to another drive. I do not understand why this misdirection is happening here. Your drives, your choice.

That's the install drive. The saves might still end up elsewhere.

True. It also depends on your UAC. This could also change where the saves end up on your pc. For example, if the adminstrator protects certain parts of you pc, they may not save in XXX location, so this means they could someplace secondary where the games are saved on your pc.

For the most part, windows 10 and 11 both have strict UAC control. You may need to change them or ask the adminstrator of the pc to do it.
