Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

Are books still broken.
As the title says.

I am just wondering if books are still broken. I have been waiting for my dwarfs to write something and its been a week. So I decided to ask here if book binding still breaks the books.

There isn't a bug that prevent books from getting written, it just takes a long time for them to come up with something original to write.

The bug with book binding is that it reduces whatever your dorfs wrote to become a one page codex and discards some material information (but it's already written, so it doesn't prevent things from getting written in the first place).

I use scrolls for this reason and my dwarves do write stuff. It can be slow though.
Double-check that they have the materials to; you need scrolls or quires in the library chest, not just sheets. My dumbasses also like to store their work in the table for ages rather than putting it away. Best of luck
Put levers in your library, set up a new Custom Labor assigned to Pull Levers and make sure 'Only Selected do this'. Then set your Scholars to that job. Click the lever and set it to repeat, your scholars will spend all of their time staying in the Library, and by being in the Library they will also Read/Ponder/Discuss and Write things. Since other Scholars are also there, I believe it encourages them to stay and 'Discuss' with those around them doing the same thing.

They will also still Eat/Drink, Pray, Etc. so you don't have to worry about them going crazy doing this. However you will have to Unlock them from doing only those jobs occasionally to let them craft and haul items to steal to keep their mood high.

My scholars are now constantly in the Library since doing this, but even with 8 Scholars I still only get one to write a book maybe every 1-2 years.
Im a strong fan of the dual Library System. One for my People and one for Visitors. The Visitor Library is far smaller and has no Bookshelves. Guest Scholars write far more often and because there are no bookshelves they cant get distracted by reading nor steal your stuff. They also leave their written material behind for you to bind or put away.

Ive had maybe 3 books written by my own 10 Scholars but easily 30+ from Guests. One Dwarven Guest has been here 3 times and he has written at least 8 long quires for me.
I would really prefer them to be able to ponder and discuss new topics with my Scholars so they learn more topics and can thus become better at everything faster but my Scholars not working + the Guests stealing Books has me using the dual Library system all the time now

That's interesting I will have to experiment with this as well. I start my first fort as early as possible, in hopes of truly writing books instead of writing books about books that have been written already. Curious if visitors will have anything to write about, I'm about 14 years in now and I don't think I've even seen a guest in my library before.
