Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault

Does anyone here like to play Imperial Guards?
It is so difficult compared to all the other races, and the campaign was a pain even on standard difficulty.

A late reaction, but then again: I'm late to the party.

Imperial Guards are actually my favorite, and I even disagree with them being underpowered in the original. Because they have their own advantages, such as the ability to quickly travel between their structures.

And they have the machine spirit of course :)

Just arm them with plasmaguns and produce vehicles ASAP and you gold. They are mega easy.

I like to play as imperial guard!!!! I like to go for artillery and howitzers all the way and maybe 1 or 2 tanks, put some machinegun pits and bunkers for defence and advance slow tearing apart the whole map!!! :D

I feel like their campaign was the easiest. Ork was the hardest by far.

Meh. Winter Assault as a whole is much easier than OG campaign. And Disorder campaign in WA IMO is easier than Order one.

OG campaign was incredibly easy, on Normal at least (compared to WA on normal). Just sit in base, tech up, and spam plasma marines and lascan preds. Very rarely I was forced to do anything else. On some maps, going out with the initial forces can earn you a lot of free req points because the map just has some AI on it that builds up over time, so in a sense you can rush and deny their econ.

In comparison the WA campaign has more time limits, more aggressive enemies, sometimes even bullcrap units spawning from out of nowhere. It's a lot more dynamic and pushes the player into aggression more often.

I found the disorder one way harder than the order one because I had two things on a time limit to get rid of. Both the IG and the Eldar force you to move out, you can't just sit in base and max out your forces.

Nah, im playing on hard only, cant comment on lower difficulties. OG campaign has a couple of very annoying grindy missions.

In WA's 4th Order mission ( when you choose with whom you gonna play last mission ) you cant build anything as IG. Your only solution is to just press forward constantly. As Eldars you cant even remove Ork base because it has 20k HP and constntly spawns scripted troops. In Dissorder campaign i just cleared whole map with both factions and made a save right before gates in order to be able to choose faction without beating this map second time. EZ.

Last Ork mission is easiest in the game because it has no time constraints and scripted enemies. You just kill single Monolith and than just press trough couple of scripted non replenishable troops right up to Crull and thats it. Unlike Dissorder last missions which i cleared from the first try i had to repley both IG and Eldars 5th missions couple of times. Eldar one was especially annoying.

Ah, I see.

Yeah, I agree that the 5th missions are not that bad for DO but the 4th one was a nigtmare for me as Orks. Had to clear the Eldar base with limited forces vs infinitely spawning troops and get to the generators in time, then switch to Chaos and bomb the convoy in time ontop of that. Then I could finally build up and take the map.

Convoy is EZ. It is highlighted on the map so you just need to drop a couple of demons on it and focus fire Land Raider. After that switch to orks and finish their part of mission and than switch back to Chaos to finish whole map.

Still the worst map of whole DOW1 games is Dark Crusade's Hyperion Peaks. That thing is brutal on hard.

I don't have many memories of DC. Wasn't a fan of the Risk style. Aight.

Yeah, the convoy itself is EZ, I just dropped Horrors on it, but the fact that you need to do it before the Eldar escape and you need to take out the gens ontop of that (for Orks) makes that a PitA. If I didn't start by killing the Eldar they'd go too deep into the map to finish off with the initial Orks (or it would be pretty hard) but if I start with killing them then destroying the convoy's gonna be a lot closer call.

- its an incredible mystery to me how that thing got a positive response from both "critics" and players. DOW as a whole is a pretty mediocre RTS franchise if you set aside graphics and setting. And in Dark Crusade it looks like devs just gave up on every aspect of the game. It had a lackluster recycled singleplayer and absolutely busted and imbalanced MP.

OK. the more I read these post the more I'm convincing myself I should just skip WA. Sounds like a really un-fun time.

All the DoW1 campaigns are good. The 1st and 2nd one are straigth maps on story but Dark crusade and soulstorm are open and more free to choose which map to attack etc. If you like imperial guard play it😁👌

- WA is fine, its story and mechanics are superior to vanilla DoW. I cant say same thing about DC and SS.
