Unique company-level wargame with very heavy emphasis on the leadership and burden. Plot after bootcamp is very realistic to army experience and realities of war are gripping from the first minutes. Plays very much like a wargame chess.
A bit lacking on the technical side and performance but delivers on the narrative, and so well researched company-level wargames are basically non-existent.
Strongly recommended. Also goes hand-in-hand with Unity of Command 2.

Mechanically, I like the leader abilities- they fit the theme and the little maneuvers you get from the various leadership styles (8 to mix and match a few of) feel cool. The "everything in war is morale" thing would probably work better if units retreated, like if morale was essentially hp. Unfortunately, my main problem with the game is mechanical, which is just that it feels odd because I don't think most units were captured alive when closed in on in melee, rather than shot, retreated, or surrendered at a distance when overwhelmed/cut off. Whereas in this game melee with riflemen is the only way to finish a unit off. Shooting is just about lowering their morale until they're cowering so you can walk right up to them (you do occasionally kill a guy, but even that mostly just effects morale, you rarely if ever finish a unit off lethally). Feels strange that a tank can't push enemy infantry or force them to retreat, it can only suppress while riflemen take nearly every enemy on the map prisoner. I like the idea of moving away from lethality/hp type combat, I think it's realistic if there's much more fire and maneuver, suppression, morale and supply considerations, but this is just like, a different brand of arbitrary/fake in another direction, which was clearly not the design attempt.

There's also a bunch of generic AI grins in a lot of the art, which is obnoxious. I like the narrative elements and historicity, which edges it back into an overall positive impression.
