If you find a weapon you want to run with instead, I'd recommend trying to find some boosts that alter the weapon to either play on its strengths and/or round out its weaknesses.
My personal favorites are the Photon, the Lightning gun, the Split Laser and the Six Shooter.
The weapon balance was terrible on release.
As for Shotgun, after the balance patch that nerfed its damage, I feel like it is no longer "OP", it's just ok. The balance of a lot of guns is surprisingly good for their respective roles.
