I started reading this trilogy with low expectations in spite of the massive praise of Alternative, and it took me multiple attempts to finally sit down and read through Muv Luv Extra. I found it boring; I've never been a fan of the cliche's and anime tropes it was seemingly full of, nor am I into the classic visual novel rom-com/drama format. After finishing Alternative though, I agree that it is absolutely worth the effort to read through the two parts before this. Great stories require investment in order to pay off, and this is one of them. If you're at all apprehensive about the first part of this series like myself, I won't be the the first (or last) to tell you that it is worth it.

Alternative is considered by many to be the best visual novel of all time -and while it's personally not my favorite, it certainly deserves that spot.
