I have it and have played it a good bit. It is showing its age now though, so I wanted to try something a bit more modern. I will probably be disappointed in all honesty haha.
You are missing out on Pharaoh. As a historical title it is one of the best as an overall game. Performance is great, features are great, excellent graphics, and it is one of the most realistic feeling vanilla games they have made. They also did well with the unit characteristics variety considering the lack of different unit types for the period.
The hate over it is really just because it isn't Medieval 3 and people see it to be small in scope. People also forget the CA main team is and has been working on a BIG title for a while now. Pharaoh is kinda an in between game. You should give it a shot.
It still feels like this game is an untapped goldmine though. It's a shame the people making MTU also lost interest in it - they were doing what CA could've charged money for.
It also outperforms Rome 2, but only by about 25%. (average daily users for 3k: 7000, Rome 2 gets 5000). All time peak was 190,000 vs 118,000.
As far as I can tell, Three Kingdoms is the second most popular game in the whole series - behind Warhammer.
By reputation issue I mean with CA. People wanted Medieval 3 or Empire 2, seemingly small scope with Pharaoh (geographically yes but content wise no), price, and then I can't remember but some kind of post they made offended alot of people. All of that worked against Pharaoh, but it is the best vanilla historical experience in my opinion. The older games require mods to be fun for me. Pharaoh is great as is.
