I know a lot of people playing cause they are familiar with Chinese 3K history, Back in Asia 3k games are big.
i just like killing army's with just my generals
Honestly, I never really got into this game, but I plan to play a new campaign soon. Reason is because of the recent Shogun show and the release of Ghost of Tsushima on PC. Yes, I know that is Japan and this is China, but still a similar style overall. It got me in the mood to give Three Kingdoms another try, while I wait for the Pharaoh update.

I have it and have played it a good bit. It is showing its age now though, so I wanted to try something a bit more modern. I will probably be disappointed in all honesty haha.
Pharaoh and Hyenas were more important
CA is probably regretting that decision right now as it seems like Pharaoh and Troy are both bleeding cash and even 3K a 5 year old game is still outselling Troy/Pharaoh considering 3K only had a mere 2 years support. To be honest, I am impressed with CA Sofia's resilience on Pharaoh and the map & free factions FLC plus the summer sale actually is quite tempting. Nonetheless, I ain't buying any historical TW from CA till they fulfill their promise of either a Northern Expansion or 3K2.

You are missing out on Pharaoh. As a historical title it is one of the best as an overall game. Performance is great, features are great, excellent graphics, and it is one of the most realistic feeling vanilla games they have made. They also did well with the unit characteristics variety considering the lack of different unit types for the period.

The hate over it is really just because it isn't Medieval 3 and people see it to be small in scope. People also forget the CA main team is and has been working on a BIG title for a while now. Pharaoh is kinda an in between game. You should give it a shot.
Cause 3k did a lot of things really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ well. So sad coop is broken tho
The official line is that they are doing a title that's just focused on Romance of the Three Kingdoms, rather than trying to do the hybrid Romance/Records mode thing they did here. They want to make a game with better DLC potential, which I suppose makes sense.

It still feels like this game is an untapped goldmine though. It's a shame the people making MTU also lost interest in it - they were doing what CA could've charged money for.
Just reviewed the numbers on SteamDB. Total War Three Kingdoms outperforms Troy, Pharoh, and Brittania combined when it comes to daily players.

It also outperforms Rome 2, but only by about 25%. (average daily users for 3k: 7000, Rome 2 gets 5000). All time peak was 190,000 vs 118,000.

As far as I can tell, Three Kingdoms is the second most popular game in the whole series - behind Warhammer.
Part of that is probably because the time period and setting is so unique. Rome 2, Attila, and Thrones are very similar so player numbers are divided. They are just in different time periods/focuses. Pharaoh is an unfair comparison due to the hostility. Pharaoh is a great game, it just won't thrive like it could have due to all the reputation issues.
I had heard Pharaoh does a few things pretty well - I suppose I just never really looked into it because the setting doesn't particularly interest me. I didn't realise there was a reputation issue to it.

By reputation issue I mean with CA. People wanted Medieval 3 or Empire 2, seemingly small scope with Pharaoh (geographically yes but content wise no), price, and then I can't remember but some kind of post they made offended alot of people. All of that worked against Pharaoh, but it is the best vanilla historical experience in my opinion. The older games require mods to be fun for me. Pharaoh is great as is.
