Apparently it's called brainpunk because of the way technology in the world works for it, information is directly streamed into the brain and displayed accordingly or utilized as such. The -punk suffix has many different variants, and typically it represents some sort of downtrodden society with a direct rejection of aspects of it (the punk part), mixed in with something that powers the world around the characters, with cyber typically referring to a logical extreme of corporatism in the future, steampunk utilizing steam and victorian era inventions, and diesel referring to heavy machinery and oil being a focus on how things work in that world. I've heard Dishonored be described as "Whalepunk" as well, an accurate description based on the broken down, disease ridden society that game takes place in and its need for using Whale Oil as energy.

Creative/marketing types are either huffing their own farts and think their copycat product is unique or they are knowingly lying about being different when it is clearly just cyberpunk.

Cyberpunk refers just as much to the art style as the setting. The art style is much more important in determining if something is cyberpunk.

Dishonored is STEAMpunk. There is no such thing as WHALEpunk. That's just stupid and anyone who seriously uses that name is an idiot.

The "punk" sub genres have been a thing for longer than any of us have been alive. Used to be used to sell sci-fi books. It's dumb, but it's been around long enough that it's really ingrained in the sci-fi genre so it'll likely not be going anywhere.

cyber punk is called cyber punk because it revolves around a cybenetic setting, as dumb as it is it aint cyberpunk its quirky like djent is

I mean... One could argue they are, no? I'm not here to start a war over it, though. It does come across to me as a little odd to hear the word "Brainpunk:" but hey, I see nothing wrong about coming up with creative words for their setting. Even if it is a little jarring to hear.

Music genres are a legitimate thing though....whereas cyberpunk is literally a cash grab for many different products because of the massive hype that surrounded Cyberpunk 2077.....I mean I don't see bands with "heavy metal" in their name at all lol.

cyber punk 2077 was based off of the ttrpg called cyber punk made back in the 80s and the ttrpg series is named after the years i.e cyber punk 2022 cyber punk 2077

cyber punk has also been a legitimate genre since the 80s-90s
