X-COM: Apocalypse

[STEAM DECK] Still not working ?!
Hi folks,

Ufo Defence fan since '96 here.
After my Nth playthrough of the original, I finally got to admit that real time was the natural way to go for the franchise, killing both the 'save scummer' and 'iron man' opposite tendances of this genra.

Apoc, here I come !
Sadly, it still runs awfully on SD:

- Native, proton and proton-experimental don't work
- Dosbox stagging through Luxtorpeda crashes on title screen
- Boxtron (DOS native) asks for dependances I was too dumb to note when notified
- proton GE-5.13-6 finally works properly, then randomly crashes T_T

There are a few threads here and there explaining in detail the procedure, but I failed miserably.

By sheer curiosity, did anybody made it through ?

Cheers

Just be aware that even if you do get it working on SteamDeck, the NoCD issue is going to cause frustration.

OpenApoc recently discovered that it is a DOSBox issue affecting all forks - see issue here at DOSBox-X tracker

https://github.com/joncampbell123/dosbox-x/issues/4904

Sadly, until DOSBox and DOSBox-X fix the problem NoCD will always present eventually

In the meantime you can compile your own distributions with the source and altering the affected lines of code in whatever DOSBox flavour you want

There is a precompiled DOSBox-X executable at the OpenApoc discord server for Win64 also

The crashes are pretty bad.

Thank you for your precious feedback.

You know what I like with Linux ?
Every little tiny thing you want to do is always asking for 30 minutes of your time, may it be hacking a highly secured official website or changing your wallpaper.

So I fiddled with openApoc a bit.
Git, prereq, compilation, etc...All good ! And then I experienced a very smooth interface, but packed with a frigging bugfest, a crash every minute, whatever I tried.

Disgusted, I minded my own business for a while.
Then...Sheesh, why not trying something really, really stupid ?

And guess what ? Apoc's windows version, with cd.iso from steam, works PER-FECT-LY on Ubuntu through wine64 !

I have to try it on Steam deck someday.

Have a nice one !

That's the problem I'm facing with my steam deck as well, constantly crashes. If you find a fix for it, please let it be known. :)

Hi Cid, in that case, you're gonna like what I found !
I'm adding a new discussion on this topic.

Cheers
