All the Good Stuff

+ The visuals and the soundtrack are soooooooo good and they compliment each other well! Running around forests, snow covered mountainsides, even poisonous bogs was such a treat to the eyes!
The music that accompanied that exploration fit perfectly the mood of the levels, and I especially liked the more somber tracks in the swamp levels and other levels that featured a more dark tone.

+ I appreciate that I had options in combat, and a skill tree that makes it a little more worthwhile to engaging in fighting. You get your standard sword, but also a giant axe for smashing enemies and a pair of claws for shredding baddies quicker. I liked being able to approach fights in different ways. The skill tree isn’t anything crazy, but it does unlock some combos to use during combat which is neat, even if they are pretty basic.

+ A small plus, but I really enjoyed the boss fights. They all look unique and each encounter is completely different from the previous.

All the Bad Stuff

- The story is generic and it never reaches a point where the gamer is supposed to be invested. It’s a saving the world trope that doesn’t do anything unique.

- Getting to the point where the skill tree starts to open up and gaining access to more weapons takes too long and it can be a drag unlocking abilities and other goodies from the skill tree.

- This is only a minor gripe, but this game talks about your furry companion Dex and her playing a role in your journey but you don’t gain access to her for a long while and even then it’s only specific levels where she’s utilized. I would have preferred a bar that fills that lets me call for her help rather than fixed levels.

Achievements

+ Going for 100% in this game will be a fun time. The achievements don’t require a lot from the gamer, just playing through the story, exploring for collectibles, completing some combat challenges and getting a little creative with a few achievements. I’m going to give the difficulty a 1/5.

Final Thoughts

Flynn: Son of Crimson is very fun. It’s got great graphics, a fun soundtrack and offers just enough to keep gamers moving forward. It does take some time to pick up, and the story won’t be engaging to some folks, but none of that detracts from the overall experience. This is an easy recommendation from me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨/5 (3.5/5)

This game gives me the same kind of excited vibe I had as a kid playing on the SNES and getting "somewhere" with my games. Progression is good fun, music is really bloody good, graphically it's pretty gorgeous, and the controls feel smooth, I don't have the fastest reflexes in the world so this isn't as punishing or as precise as certain other platform games, but I'm having an absolute ball playing it! The moves are glorious and I feel things unlock at a pace that isn't overwhelming or too much to take in. The character designs are quite lovely, I am very fond of the bearded gnome-y dwarf-y things. They're cute! I absolutely recommend this game for a modern sense of nostalgia.
