Battletech Lore
I thought that it would be good to have a central place for the Battletech lore on here, so that the players who are new to the Battletech Universe had a place where they could look up most of the Lore questions.
My idea is to use free sources for now, without them having to pay for it, yet.
I love the book series but that's the reason I haven't added them.
Feel free to add the lore sources you know.

If you want to read up on anything, just go to sarna.net, it's the like the Wikipedia for Battltech, only more accurate than Wikipedia.
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Main_Page

But since I know not all of you are fond of reading let's start with the videos.

There is the "noob friendly" series, basically the fast food version that gives you the bare minimums as well as some basics on MWO, which we don't really need for this game.
Instead the two history videos will do, they are the very short and abridged version of the backstory of the universe:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvdqB6kBUQtwVj9NM1sfvAw-400uJ5vHy

Now I do hope you all like a bit more meaty videos, great for listening to in the background.
Critical Rocket has a series of videos called Lore Warrior, where you can learn the backstory of the Houses, the Periphery, the Clans and their Mechs and Vehicles in short less than 10 minute videos.

They are pretty good and even enjoyable and entertaining if you know most of the lore.
Afaik they are based on the TROs and other material.
And they might also be quite good for players that are new to the Battletech Universe, as they also pass on some of the concepts of the Battletech universe.

He started in MWO, but also plays Battletech, and most of his videos are based on the TROs and other sourcebooks so don't let the beginnings in MWO put you off.
(I've had more than one discussion with him and let's just say he does disagree with more than a few of PGIs design decisons.)

The coolant truck video, as the coolant truck featured primarily in one of our discussions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8QimNQE3B8&index=8&list=PLu297KNZJkOtIx9qiyhBFaNn4hvsH6R8-

House Davion (a narrated, supposedly "fan narrated" version of the 1988 House davion Sourcebook)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLe8GSd1s4jsFpXpmUFZ5dstcVPtXeRIwu

I also enjoy the Mitey Pirate's videos, especially his faction video on the Periphery:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_dsILVUNos&index=8&list=PLV-c18oU4ftIIyGEaj9iaoK8HmWvfCmIu

His playlists can be a bit messy, but he covers issues like Elementals, or the Wobblies (perjorative nickname for Word of Blake members) that Critical rocket for example does not cover.
And while his videos are not overly long they tend to be deep.
The playlists, (they are a bit unorganized.)
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKCGZx3bIc5vRmIPjdTd8-g/playlists

Just don't trust his pronounciations they tend to be way off.
For example, Davion is spoken Da-vee-on, Liao Lee-ow, Tharkad=Thurrkud (roll that r)

Madcat 529 a bad group of videos either, with a focus more on the Star League, the Clans and the 31st Century.

Star League:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVhllWq5_BA

I don't like his Clan Video, as it's pretty inaccurate and skims over some pretty important bits.
but you can make up your mind:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQsi-1x6RYk

The one on the "political Century" is much better:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmd4X9J_l-w

An explanation of what Battltech is.........in rant form........warning don't watch if easily triggered, as it contains swearwords and about as little Political correctnes as using an FNR-5 Fafnir against an Urbie........it's a hoot though.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h92N63ElI4s

(And yeah he loves this game...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbWYLeOkwfA )

So this is me done for now, why don't you add those sources you know.

Good hunting, shoot straight, and watch your heat

Wolf, word of advice.
Bite sized digests, not wall of text.
People TL;DR walls of text.

Yeah I know, sadly.
Funnily enough most of that Wall of text are links.

I'll see if I can restructure it a bit more topical tomorrow.
Aurigan Reach- Not part of the classic storyline.

House Davion-The master race, the white savior, the main protagonist, the Good faction. Learn to kiss up them (or better yet, get your House Princess to be inpregnanted by them), the existence of your faction depend on it.

Comstar-If Comcast and Scientology had a baby, then anoint him as the next pope. I think we all just pooped from sheer horror of that thought. So whenever you hear "Peace of Hubbard Blake be with you", either the phone bill just arrived, or your entire family are about to die.

House Liao- The Imperial Chinese Government of the future, complete with Fu-man-Chu stereotype, run by the Russian KGB, with the economic and military strength of North Korea (All your cold war perils in one!) . They also were aligned with the Scottish until the Scottish figure out they are not on the winning side. Either way, if you are stupid enough to sign up with them, expect them asking you to set fire to orphanages then backstab you after.

Taurian Concordat-They hate House Davion for some reason.

Magistracy of Canopus-A nation of hot girls ruling space Los Vegas, and later, hot CATgirls. This would be any SJW's dream of a "strong, independent women ruled society", if not for the fact most women there also enjoy sex. So we can classify MOC as "Boys sexual fantasy land"

House Marik- Nobody care about them.

House Kurita- Imperial Japanese Army with WWII brutality, 17th century military tactics and run on their economy on the back of slaves. (Probably because most Americans thought the Japanese were running their workers like slaves before the Chinese came along).

House Steiner- Germans with the wealth of British Empire and the Military sense of French.
Dernière modification de ArchmageXin; 11 sept. 2018 à 16h49
Wolf's Dragoons- Spies pretending to be mercenaries until they got their first paycheck and found out that the pay really WAS better on the other side.

Federated Commonwealth- The lovechild of Steiner and Davion, all one big happy family, complete with regicidal offspring. Was good while it lasted.

Interdiction- What happens when you don't pay your phone bills.

Free Rasalhague Republic- The 'Free' Republic that seems to spend most of its existence under someone else's rule. Space Palestine in short.

Battlemechs- Giant war robots whose main purpose is to stand out in battle so everyone knows who to shoot at.
House Merik- think of post revolution america with articles of confederation but with even less cohesion. only reason their that big is the other houses know that they will unite if attacked with full force so the neighbors just skirmish with them and let interior politcs destroy themselves.

Basically nobody cares about them
Speaking of lore, I thought it was strange how they get so much right in this game, yet still get a lot wrong. Like, where are those giant, goofy neurohelmets and the coolant vests? Oh and the ubiquitous mechwarrior short shorts, it gets hot in those cockpits after all.

And sadly, they could've added in all the Periphery weirdness like the Canopian pleasure circuses and bloodsport death matches. I was rather disappointed when you met the Canopian liason and she wasn't wearing some skimpy/revealing outfit, unlike all of the artwork in the sourcebooks. Sad really. They could've spiced this game up so much.

They tried making this game way to serious and it ends up not being that much fun. And like I said, this is the Periphery. The over the top, anything goes frontier. They might as well have put the setting of this game in the Lyran Commonwealth for how stodgy and uptight the main story is.
They were probably afraid some kid was going to explain to his mom that there is a perfectly good reason why some girl in her underwear was piloting a mech. :steamhappy:

But yeah, cooling vests, shorts/briefs/panties and a trashcan on top of your head. Battletech in the 80s. :)

We've been in a steady cultural decline since the 80s. The Backstreet Boys were probably the horsemen of the apocalypse.

Get the RogueTech mod. I cant give you your goofy neurohelmets, but I can give you a better BattleTech experience.

This is such a great initiative, Wolf! In fact, I will pin this topic to make sure the lore will be easy to find.

.....snip....
House Steiner- Germans with the wealth of British Empire and the Military sense of French.

You forgot their love of overly heavy combat units.................like a certain period of german history...........
If you want assault mechs, they will dazzle you with their variety of models and Variants, if you want a light mech, they will look at you like you are mad........

Their units are very strong, and they will crush any enemy like a mighty hammer.....given that they can tie their enemy down or box them in so that they can't get away. ;)

House Marik - Well, they do have the parlamentary system of the Brits, an idustrial base almost as strong the Lyran Commowealth, and the political stability and neighbourly friendliness of the Balkans........only with Nukes!

The difference to House Liao is that they excel at stabbing each other in the back, instead of Outsiders.
BTW you forgot the occansional made ruler that the Liaos tend to have. ;)

Thank you, much appreciated.

Should I still do a rewrite to make it a bit more ordered and readable?
Question is open to everyone.

My idea right now is to break the OP up into topics a bit more.

Like
1. Basic stuff (what is BT)
2. Basic universe information.

Then either:
3. IS Factions
4. Periphery Factions
5. Clan Factions*
6. Vehicles, Mechs and Aerotech
7. Weaponry and Systems
*I wonder if I can find some lore videos on the Society for example.......

Or instead:
3. Vehicles, Mechs and Aerotech
4. Weaponry and Systems
4. 5. 6 Factions

What are all your thoughts on that? I mean I find the backstory interesting, but I can imagine that most people who are new would find what are all those systems more interesting.

@Mistfox and Padmite :D that is a discussion that I'd love to see ;) ! btw, I thought that was beachwear, must be getting old! ;) anyway yeah I missed the helmets too they are such an integral part of the mech piloting.
I was surprised at the ammoung of coolant suits......although you could argue that they are more or less royality to they could afford such a rare item as a symbol of wealth.

After all you can almost buy a mech for that. It was part of the payment and the decider when Jeremiah Rose bought his Charger in Main Event. I would still argue that he was shortchanged.

On that note:

Charger - A mech that you do not want! Seriously! It's an 80 ton Assault built for scouting, with a 400 engine and only 5 small lasers, as weaponry was seen as a distraction, one that could put the mech in danger.
And no despite it being an 80 ton being used for scouting it was not ordered and designed by Lyrans!
They would've complained about the lack of firepower and armour! ;)

Instead it was mostly used by the Draconis Combine and the Capellans.

Very suprised noone has posted this, available for free from the battletech website www.battletech.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/BattleTechUniverseGuide-1.pdf
S!

Got almost all the books on the shelf. Need to find a few to complete the collection. So no wonder I am a sucker for BT.
