A tip (which should ideally not even have to be considered) is to make a new character and level them up to 20, then pass your gear to them. They'll still be getting worse as they level but at least you'll be starting from peak strength while you continue to improve the only thing that actually makes you stronger, your gear.
I also find it funny that the exp boosting hat comes with the penalty of having no stats/set bonus, the exp boost is a penalty enough that I probably wouldn't wear it even if it had best in slot stats, If they made you gain zero exp and came with no stats I would probably wear it
I found the set bonuses are the big difference to taking on nightmare, esp bog and beyond.
For example, the Ranger's poison ability is great AOE for mobs, with set bonuses I found it made a huge difference
and don't get me started on the other classes like Rogue void damage increases and Wizards fire/flame.
What i can say is I noticed the heroism attributes can help a lot if used wisely and Ragewind Nightmare becomes more survivable solo from lev 350 upwards with 3 to 5 star gear but still rock hard!
